What Would U Do: Unpaid Incident Report filed + Item relisted w/ many bids + Buyer pays after 8 day

Need advice from the community.

Background:

  • I'm not new to selling on ebay but I sell basically stuff like electronics when I decide to upgrade.
  • In my 100+ transactions, I've never had an issue until now.
  • Listed an electronic item that sold Thurs 9/7.
  • My ad requested immediate payment via PayPal.
  • Sent mulitple ebay mssgs to buyer (2 reviews only) seeking payment with no repsonse from buyer.
  • I opened up a non payment claim (my first time ever doing this) on 9/9 & was told the UPI Assistant  would be deployed 9/11.
  • I tried relisting my item on 9/11 but system wouldn't let me.
  • Befuddled - I listed the item as another item I had for sale.

Currently

  • My newly listed item has multiple bids from highly reviewed veteran ebayers
  • Then I woke up today & see that the original buyer has paid me & the UPI assistant has closed out the UPI.

What to do?

  • The original buyer didn't answer any of my requests
  • I don't want to cancel my current auction with <2 days to go & dissapoint bidders
  • I want to refund original buyer & move on but system won't let me cancel order
  • Have read too many cancel orders are a black ball on sellers.  I have cancelled 2 times on this auction - 1 through a bidder's request & 1 because of a mistake with listing info.
  • Afraid I will get bad marks from original buyer & ebay.
  • What can I do?

BIG FAIL as a seller

The sytem tried to help you and you went around it by listing the item on your own.

You owe the 1st buyer the item.

You should cancer your auction ASAP and ship the item to the rightful buyer. . .

That said, the support representative said  thye have refunded my final value fees & that it basically shows up as a refund for the item for not paying immediately as requested - so no defect.

They lied. eBay doesn't recognize that as a valid reason for cancelling, and no customer service rep can make that defect go away. What CSRs do is tell you exactly what you want to hear, to keep their call duration average down.

Since you rarely sell, and this is the second time you've cancelled a sale of this item without a buyer's request, you're skating on extremely thin ice.

Correction for you on this item:

@1st time was  a bid @  another's buyer's request.

2nd time there was no cancellation because system didn't allow me becuase the item was paid on  the UPI incident.

So no cancelllation period.

You said:

"I have cancelled 2 times on this auction - 1 through a bidder's request & 1 because of a mistake with listing info."

So that's one. The late payer is #2, unless you really believe that CSR has magical powers.

Let me further clarify since my writing didn't provide enough context:

But again:

#1 was ONE bid during the auction. - auction went onto completion with results in #3 below.

#2 was the same listing that I had to end prematurely (cancel) due to a mistake in the listing & which was relisted as #1 above

#3 is the late payer was refunded & no cancellation.

I am not offended.

The buyer did pay...granted not as quickly as we would all like...

however you did have the opportunity to do something about that.

Knowing how things work in the real world or learning how to cope with a simple transaction on eBay works just fine for me... more so when the tools are readily available on any page on the site.

You know enough that you have to play by the rules,no matter if you agree with them or not.

Batvu, this is not a personal perference of  the dog's.  You would not be in this situation if you knew policy, which is where the dog is coming from.  I understand that this is your first UID.  BUT you created the situation by not following Ebay policy on this.  You don't list something until the previous transaction with the UID is closed out as the buyer may pay, then you have two buyers, one of which is going to slam you with negative feedback because they feel you cheated them of their win.  YOu kept the UID open longer than necessary as well.  You need to send to the person who paid and cancel the bids and the new listing before it ends.

Ebay specifies the first buyers has time to pay for their win.  You relisted right away in violation.  Sorry that you didn't want to sit on this money but you are required to by Ebay.  Not the dog's fault.  Ebays wants you to close out one sale before you re list the item again.

You can verify all this by checking Unpaid Item Disputes in the Help pages.

Good Luck to you.

Batu, if you had fully refunded from PayPal after your buyer's 8th day payment, an eBay smartbot would award an out-of-stock defect.

So when you fully refund at eBay, with the help of CS, you got similar results.

Re: What Would U Do: Unpaid Incident Report filed + Item relisted w/ many bids + Buyer pays after 8

You actually need to go by the rules.

This mean cancel your current listing and sell to the original buyer and never relist until the uid is complete.

If you choose to cancel somehow with out the original-first buyer acceptance who paid in time you will definately face a defect from ebay and risk getting a negative.

As for this buyer with low feedback you don't actually know if he is a veteran or not since he may opened an account to bid on items and resell them in another account.

Whatever you decide to do it is not in anyway the buyer's fault.

You had made a mistake that does not worth the risk your trying to take.

I appreciate your thoughtful feedback.

Given that the system is black & white & I did not understand it fully, the fact of the matter is that buyer did not pay within the 6 days.

So even if they did eventually pay, it was well outside of window the was set forth within the black & white systemeven if I had the autopilot on.

And just because I did turn on the manual UPI option unintentionally - the contract spirit was already broken.

So for those people above who have lectured me I would say that I'll let the chip fall where they may but things have a way of evening up & I can look in the mirror & say I've done nothing wrong.

I'm trying to understand why a person paying on the 8th day gets preferential accommodation even thought the autopilot gives them only 6 days?

So you are saying the ebay system would still ding me because the manual option was selected & payment was made 2 days after autopilot?

My thought is that there are no mssgs or communication from the original buyer nor from me to have this extension as a contract in place.

So it will interesting if this comes to be a noticeable negative against me or not...

Re: What Would U Do: Unpaid Incident Report filed + Item relisted w/ many bids + Buyer pays after 8

You're misunderstanding. The Auto UPI Assistant gives however many days YOU set it to. From what you've said it appears you had it set to open after 4 days which then gives them another 4 days to pay (which they did - within the 8 days YOU had set it for)

They didn't have to pay in 6 because you gave them more than 6. There is no contract "spirit"; sellers can give buyers as much time as they want; 6 days is simply the minimum, which you didn't use.

Re: What Would U Do: Unpaid Incident Report filed + Item relisted w/ many bids + Buyer pays after 8

They get peferential treatment, as you call it, because you did not close out the Unpaid Item Dispute when you could have.  Since they paid, they completed their obligation, but now you have yours.

It doesn't require any messages or communication to have that contract in place, Ebay gives 48 hrs before a UID can be opened, and 96 hrs for it to close.  When you left it open, you voluntarily extended that time frame, giving the buyer the chance to pay later, which they did.

As has been said, you get a serious defect for OOS since you cancelled the buyer who paid.  They may or may not leave negative feedback but I would not be surprised if they did.

OP, no one here  is against you, just so you know that.  If anything, there is frustration that you acted without knowing how to proceed and caused these issues for yourself.   So very sorry.
