Warning: eBay does not protect Power Sellers from Buyer Extortion!

Having been a Power Seller since 1999 I am totally appalled as the way we have been treated by eBay the past few days; and over the past several years as well. Having a perfect 100% feedback rating for the past several years; we had a customer who chose to post negative feedback; and then we contacted the buyer and he demanded that he keep the item and immediately refund him the total purchase price of nearly 300 bucks; and then he would agree to remove the negative feedback. All of these messages occurred through eBay message center and we have proof of this extortion in plain language against our company. We contacted eBay by phone on 2 occasions and both times eBay told us that we should comply with their demands.  This is not the first time that eBay has treated our company like criminals over the past several years. After paying eBay hundreds of thousands of dollars in commission fees since 1999 we have decided to take our business elsewhere as their behaviour is totally unacceptable. So beware all of you Power Sellers that eBay does permit extortionists to practice their trade!

Re: Warning: eBay does not protect Power Sellers from Buyer Extortion!

There is more to the sotry here they we aren't hearing. Look at the DSR's and the feedback revisions. As a buyer - I'd be upset too if I placed an order and it was lost - but that's my luck - Murphy's Law so I'm a little more forgiving and wouldn't bother leaving feedback at all if the item was then shipped quickly and arrived as described.

But not everyone is like me and many buyers leave feedback or open cases without contacting the seller. Also maybe they did try to contact the seller and didn't get a response. It wasn't until the seller contacted them asking for a revision that any type of "extortion" was suggested and since we have no idea of the exchange on the seller's end - the buyer could have flippantly said - give me the part and the refund and then I'll revise - not extortion but an off the cuff remark like when h e double hockey sticks freezes over.

We would reconsider if they treated us fairly; but we told CS that if wasn't for eBay Power Sellers such as us; then they would not have a job since we actually pay their salaries!

Having the power seller designation means .... nothing. All it means is that you sell $3000.00 and 100 transactions in a year.

Of course, there is a special board ............

PLEASE DISREGARD THIS POST in it's entirety because it clearly appears to us that many of those that have already posted have claimed us to be a bunch of criminals that deserves to be banned permanently from eBay. Just another good reason for our company to leave eBay. Have a great day to all of you.

Re: Warning: eBay does not protect Power Sellers from Buyer Extortion!

If you do leave we wish you luck where ever you go - but I'm sorry - this is not a pro or anti seller board. We hear one side of a story - look at feedback, DSRs, items for sale and sold before we comment on a situation.

If you had been following the posts here - you would have seen that Ebay's response to feedback left most times is "it's the seller's opinion" and being Ebay bends over backwards to accomodate buyer's - there are few things that seller's can do to change many of the circumstances presented here. Many times we do find that a seller precipitated the problem and try to advise them on how not to repeat the mistake.

Yes, it seems like the buyer was unhappy about some aspect of the sale, left the feedback, and then was contacted by the seller, perhaps for a feedback revision, then the buyer got even more upset and proposed the I'll change the feedback if you give the item for free. Hope I am reading into this correctly.

And from what I see in other posts above, it looks like the seller has possibly made a habit of this and got bit this time.

We were extremely careful how we worded our response to the buyer as in the past we were able to have CS to remove the negative feedback due to extortion tactics. In this recent case we have a separate message in which we had the buyer to double verify for clarification purposes only their extortion demands; and they replied Yes.

You did not answer my question. What exactly did you say to the buyer in your first message to him after the negative?

Re: Warning: eBay does not protect Power Sellers from Buyer Extortion!

So you missed the customer's order? Yes, it is deserving of a negative feedback, but it did not have to end the way it did. Instead of your very negative response accusing the buyer of blackmail, you could have simply replied:

"Sorry about that. Our fault. Shipped as soon as we found out".

For me as a potential customer, that would reassure me and make me ignore the negative feedback. I suggest to all, before you respond to a negative feedback, take a deep breath, sleep on it and then write something polite, and clearly state your side. No insults or angry replies.

Many sellers have lost customers not by the negative feedback they got, but the angry vicious replies to the feedbacks. It makes a potential buyer wonder what kind of treatment he is in for if things go wrong.

I figured it at least means you've been around long enough to know that eBay won't protect you from buyer extortion.
