WHY must they keep playing with the code?

So I just got home from the hospital, and see that VIEWS has been limited to only 30 days. I would much rather see that I had an item listed for a year with 1456 views and 2 watch! I AM smart enough to average that out myself!
I also hate the new listing page design. To many drop down question this or that and MUST FILL selection. It also take sup too much real estate and involves more pan-n-scan of the page than necessary.

E-bay is not the only one. So my question is "What 12 year olds with no usage experience do they hire to do code these websites and applications?" Or maybe more accurately, WHO do they survey when the movie is premiered?

LEAVE THINGS ALONE!!!!!!!

I know I was shocked too. I do believe that a vacation hiatus might be in order if things don't pick up. That, or I might just have a fire sale and call it a weekend. My barn is full, the auctions are barren, and it's like not worth it anymore.

Maybe I can find a buyer to take it all> smile!

It worked for me. Just trying to help.

With a little seller input in the design, eBay could have easily added options to give all sellers what they want.  30 days rolling, old way or other options could have been one click away.

Re: WHY must they keep playing with the code?

I don't think it is working right. I have one item, listed on May 10, that shows 1 watcher and zero views. I am positive that it used to be a number greater than zero. I don't think I can trust the numbers now.

Re: WHY must they keep playing with the code?

Buyers prefer fresh listings with current views. Just because something has had 100 views does not mean it is a current popular item. It just means it has been collecting dust for years. The new views counter makes things more realistic for buyers. Before GTC is worked great but since then no one has any idea how long an item has been listed.

Re: WHY must they keep playing with the code?

I get the buyers perspective, but that doesn't help a seller manage inventory. How do you know what is dead and what sells through, especially coordinated with time-of-year? That's why I keep my own data-system that! NOT an efficient way to run an army.

That's all I'm attempting to bring forth here.

I do believe you hit upon it. I'm not saying they need 1000 opinionated morons telling them what to do. But a sampling from many types of stores/sellers/buyers.FUNCTIONALITY is just as important as new toys.

When I do database work, I get input from actually a majority of users. There's nothing like a wall full of post-it-notes during a meeting.

I only bring all this up because a heretofore UN-named museum I worked for spent over $80K to get a website built. Total fail! - Then the lawsuits prevailed.

Doing it Right(er) the first time is my obsession!

That's the biggest problem (though there are many) with Ebay's IT.  In any business I've ever worked for (a lifetime in IT), changes are made to any system for only a couple of reasons, regulatory, new products or #1 USER REQUESTED.

At Ebay, we the users do not only not request the changes, which is the typical scenario, we aren't even in the loop.  We don't know about them, we don't test them (& neither does Ebay) & yet, here they are, foisted upon us with no reason for existing, no testing, no warning, no nothing.  At most companies (my experience is mostly Fortune 100 & huge software companies), the first rule of IT is to NOT change the UI.  You jump hurdles to leave the UI alone, unless it's absolutely necessary to change it & if it is, you have the users VERY involved in designing & testing it, then you train them extensively.  Someone who understands IT absolutely needs to be steering the IT Ship at Ebay & hasn't for a long time 😞

ETA:  I agree with you also about preferring the old counters.  I don't mind the bots being gone, but I sell long tail, I need way more than 30 days to know how an item is doing.

Re: WHY must they keep playing with the code?

@dash-1505

I have been on eBay since 2000. The problem is eBay lets sellers talk amongst themselves... none of our ideas are meant to make their way to eBay.

eBay does not have a process for sellers to easily communicate or exchange ideas with eBay; nor does eBay seem interested in being bothered by what sellers think about current or future changes.  eBay knows better than sellers what sellers need for their business - right now you need rolling totals and not the total numbers. Just be thankful you have eBay to tell you what you need 😉

Re: WHY must they keep playing with the code?

The new listing tool is far from a disaster. It just takes some time to get used to and it works great with mobile devices. People here were complaining awhile back that the Mobile apps needed to be improved and it seems as if this works better for us using strictly mobile, and it would integrate with mobile better from a PC.

Except there already IS a mobile app.  Forcing a mobile-optimized UI on those who are NOT using a mobile device is ludicrous.  Operating Systems are different for a reason.  They exist to optimize each platform's unique pros & cons.   It would be like forcing everyone to use DOS b/c some people like to list using DOS 🙂  The people who like to list on mobile, already have a way to do that, optimized for that O/S (or multiple OS's).

Correct -  but  rolling numbers don't help with capturing historic information. Like why do my sales (or type of goods) do good in October and not July! (or some other comparison)

You can still view 2 YEARS worth of Views data, all it takes is a click.

Also since the views data was a cumulative number how would be able to tell what months the views took place?

Under the new system you can actually do that.

Re: WHY must they keep playing with the code?

Some simple mathematics resolved this problem. This is just that the brain trust should  think things through before making wholesale changes. You can defend them all you want.

Thanks again for your enlightened intuitiveness. I managed to find those answers myself.

Like for every question there is an equal and opposite retort.

Re: WHY must they keep playing with the code?

I agree with your observation. And so the problem grows. Next argument will be why it won't work correctly in Chrome or on a Ubuntu machine. But I agree, we have lost Desktop functionality in favor of the folks with the phone in their butt!

COMPARABILITY is a remnant of the 50's. A time when a Chevy starter worked on all engines. Lack of uniformity, as with this nations laws  are the real issue.

Re: WHY must they keep playing with the code?

ok let me change that. The whole platform is a disaster. Every day there is some glitch or two or three.  The people running ebay get their big paychecks and really do nothing. There is probably so much behind the scenes stuff going on with ebay that you would be amazed at their incompetency .
