Just wondering where all the eBay TV ads are as we head into the holiday season? Sellers pay a lot of fees including FVF, payment processing, as well as fees on shipping and even sales tax with the new eBay update. With the pandemic eBay is coming off two of their best years of sales in the history of eBay, but for some reason eBay is non existent in terms of TV advertising. eBay is always telling sellers how to run their businesses better, but one of the main things sellers should want from eBay is an aggressive level of TV ads especially during the holiday season. Many online marketplaces which are direct competition for eBay are doing aggressive TV ads including Amazon, Poshmark, Mercari, Etsy, Deal Dash, Overstock, Walmart, Target, and others. I'm curious if anyone has seen a tv ad in the last 6 months? If so was it one of eBay's 3 main focused items: sneakers, trading cards, or eBay Motors?

eBay is pushing Motors heavy with TV commercials. They are at every break during Nascar races, & during the Sunday morning car guy shows. Featuring some woman I've never heard of, & Tom Whatshisname from NPR's Car Talk. I forget the tagline, something like "Let's Motor".

Even amazon advertises every day and they are a household name and an instant go-to for nearly everything small and new when you need to make a simple quick purchase. If they advertise, it's because it works.
It's silly to say that we are adds for every other compelling platform and talk about demographics. They are so doing it because it works!
It is beyond reason that eBay thinks it does not need to spend money on advertising- as a company, they simply choose to keep the money, and give it to execs and shareholders, that would otherwise be used to help the company grow again.

Very Good Question!!

I run into ebay ads quite frequently on youtube......they are all targeted to ebay motors which represents a very large portion of their business.
Unfortunately I do not sell car parts....... I do however sell in the sporting good category and this time of year is HUGE for hiking, camping and hunting......every single sporting goods chain is driving that home.
The outdoor category is no slouch itself....... that being said I have never seen a targeted ad anywhere for this category ever.

The eBay ad currently running with the guy who bought the too short windshield wipers is pretty funny.

TV is still a viable form of advertising whether you watch tv or not. TV viewers have reached 5.4 billion worldwide and that stat is growing every year. Many of eBay’s marketplace competitors are doing tv advertising as I stated. eBay isn’t smarter than their competitors, just greedier. The term “TV” refers to streaming, cable, and satellite on your smart tv, phone, tabelet, etc or however people watch tv shows and wherever people watch tv or videos: YouTube, Vimeo, Tubi, Pluto, etc. The question is where is eBay advertising? The stats show that people do in fact watch tv especially in the 18-49 age group/demo: 20 million people watch Monday Night Football every week and 15 million people watch Thursday Night Football every week. That's just two football games.

The trend: A large share of consumers aren’t planning to wait until they stash away their Halloween decorations before they begin shopping for the holidays.

@masterblasterplanet The Prime Day event begins this Tuesday and runs for 48 hours. And of course, there are already "early" specials going on. Many sites, including Target and WalMart, are piggy-backing onto this.
From what I can tell, ebay isn't doing anything really special.
As I've been saying, so far I've seen NO evidence that ebay intends to do much Holiday marketing apart from its Verticals.
They didn't do any last year, and they don't seem to be planning any this year.
I'd be very happy if they proved me wrong.

I'm 57, hubby is 72. We have an antenna and do watch OTA television from time to time, mainly PBS, ION and MeTV, so no current television shows, mostly older stuff. We see ads, and very nice ones, all the time on ION
...from Etsy. I've never seen an Ebay ad on television.
We don't stream much because our internet sucks, and we haven't had satellite television for over ten years.

I can appreciate ebay's desire to use target advertising, thinking that you get more bang for your buck, but unfortunately to that is not enough. It is difficult for sure to cover so many different categories but hat in itself should be the key in their advertising- you need to bring people back to ebay- remind them of all the great things they have gotten. you need to attract new buyers- let them know that if its on the internet- you will find it on ebay ( although that is changing because sellers are leaving and taking their product...).
At this point you need to fix the search engine and advertise that "we've made it EASIER to find what your looking for"- hint, just show people what they actually type in the search box instead of unrelated Chinese market trinkets and promoted listings.... you will be amazed at how the sales will sour because people are not frustrated and leave to search on google instead.
Advertise and spend money on google again! bring the buyers and we will bring the product....win win

"I don't think TV advertisement is going to capture that target group, either".
So eBay is smarter than their competition? Their reported earnings and reports that millions of buyers and sellers are leaving eBay annually say otherwise. Amazon runs tv ads very aggressively. Their trucks are in my neighborhood several times per day also as a reminder. No eBay trucks. Nothing to make people think about eBay. I spoke with a girl who worked at the vet today and she asked me where I bought my hat and I responded eBay. Then she said she hadn't bought anything on eBay in many years. I asked her where she made most of her purchases and she said Amazon. Everyone knows about them, yet they do a ton of tv advertising and the same can be said about Walmart, McDonald's, and Target to name a few. There's a reason companies advertise. It keeps the name fresh in people's brains for their next purchase. If you want to get business you have to advertise and eBay is not keeping up with their competition.
