Views

Recently  I've seen a bunch of sellers coming here complaining about slow sales because ebay has been messing with views.

Let's agree that  ebay has been messing with views.  Let's say the views are TOTALLY SCREWED UP.

How does that effect sales?

@inhawaii

Get out of here with that logic. That does not work here.

EVERYTHING affects sales, if eBay changes the color of their logo, that stops sales.

Well, how about a nice conspiracy theory?

I seem to remember once reading that eBay Search bots/algorithm/whatever involves evaluating the "desirability" of a listing by checking (among other things) views.  If views were low, the listing might be considered to be undesirable and much less likely to be displayed in Search.

I also remember reading that eBay considered an item to be undesirable if it got a lot of views without getting a sale because there must be something "wrong" with it.

Re: Views

If Ebay removes the view counter totally does that mean that there will never be another item sold here?

The whole view counter thing here is ridiculous.  It's NEVER been right.  I've sold many, many items that supposedly had zero views.

The views only mean something if the view counter actually works properly, and even then they don't mean much, because it doesn't matter if you have zero views or a million, what matters is a sale.

The easier you are to offend the easier you are to control.

Re: Views

The view indicators & actual views are definitely in chaos. However, that shouldn't stop anyone from listing & selling. Keep in mind that your item might be seasonal & might not have any views at the present time. Plus, you have all the outside factors that are influencing the buyers spending habits. Stay the course, list away, sell, & ship away!

Good luck!

Hey ramblin' boy why don't you settle down? Boston ain't your kind of town.

Before George H W Bush ran for president he was the director of the CIA. While campaigning in New Hampshire he was asked if he had ever been to a Communist country. Without missing a beat he said, in a very off handed way “Well, I’ve been to Massachusetts”

I had just moved to California, which promptly elected a Governor known as “Moonbeam” and rapidly became lefty as well, so I finally settled down in Nevada. And, you’re right, Boston is not my kind of town. Thanks for noticing.

Re: Views

It doesn't affect sales, in fact I have quiet a lot that have zero page views and sold.

Re: Views

I've had zero view items sell, too.

The many views and no sales simply drops the item in search (one metric is relevancy), but it could be for any reason including poor title SEO which doesn't represent the actual item very well, so it doesn't come up in searches for those actually looking for it, but does for someone who isn't, so they click out without any judgment on desirability.  I don't look at views that much and haven't considered a direct link (I don't think there is one given that we're now looking at only organic views and not the other riff-raff that gets in there, which is really only a cosmetic change), but the more unique an item the less I think people have to worry about this because it won't be drowned in a bunch of like items.

ETA:  I had something with 16 watchers and a bunch of views - an ordinary thing, nothing unusual - that I ended and will relist because I think it got onto someone's blog - there's no other reason for that many watchers to be crowding into that item...but not purchasing it.  This has happened before and those items never sell. It's like a curse.

Re: Views

Guess I shouldn't have sold those items where I didn't have a single prior view or a watcher.  Those rascal buyers  jist went  and bought it and paid for it - they must have been messed up...

That is an interesting thought which I hadn’t considered.

If I could explore that with you a bit.

When the views count was for the entire time that the listing was up it would seem to make sense for slow selling items. But I have some listings that sell on a regular basis and I constantly restock before they run out. As a result some of my listings are as much as 4 years old - but still selling well - except I had no idea of the currentliness (I think that’s a word?) of the views.

I checked my current listings and many of them have a few to a dozen views which is what I would expect for a 30 days period.

But I have some with several to many dozen views in 30 days and few to no sales. Within the context of your comment do you think that is a problem (regarding search placement) that needs to be addressed? Or am I overthinking it?

Re: Views

Excuse me for being technical* - you had to  have at least one prior view for someone to buy it - but you  never say it.  On a  rare occasion have sold items  within  a few seconds  of listing it - kinda' nice - guess that what the mean by Having The Right Item at the Right Price at the Right Time.  When that happens it only takes one views - when one has multiple  views those are nosy other eBay (or other venue)sellers selling the  same or similar item or just "window shoppers" looking and saying "that is nice or ugly" and do the "walk on by".

One more thing - have read the book called "Men Are From Mars and Women Are From Venus" twice and discovered I have a better chance of understanding the writings of William Shakespeare.  Maybe  beer will help (don't do wine)
