Username in item title?

I have occasionly listed a custom order with the title "Custom order for (user)".
Someone on another forum tells me this is against ebay rules.

Could someone here please point me to the rule?
I don't understand why this would be a problem.
Seems like the best way to sell to a spicific buyer.

Re: Username in item title?

But your listing will still show up  when members look in your category and sort by Newly Listed..

Also, you must have some minimum of information in your listing, because placeholder listings are a policy violation.

Thanks Duchess.

You get it. I don't think anybody else did.

Making the title invisible to searches is less hassle than overpricing, best offers, and arranging times.

I will be using "private" from now on.

What about the people who search new in a particular category?

IMHO it's better to set up an auction-format listing rather than fixed price with gimmicks like weird titles.  Set the opening bid price at the agreed-upon price, then after your chosen buyer places their bid, you can use the seller's option to end an auction early to sell to the current high bidder.  And if that member flakes on you, then you still have a regular auction that might sell to somebody else.

And what happens if a couple of people bid on it past the minimum?

Re: Username in item title?

You can either sell it to the (new) high bidder or cancel the extra bids.

Then you would disappoint one person or the other, which is what you want to try and avoid.

What reason would you give to cancel the extra bids - as those people did nothing wrong.

Or you have disappointed the original person you are setting this up for.

You know, you could possibly put into the listing that the shipping has been priced to ship to Ex: Birmingham Alabama.  Then if anyone who doesn't live in Birmingham Alabama purchases it, you could legitimately cancel due to problem with address.

Not a problem. A relisting with only the name changed.

I can see you are destined to have a long and successful selling career here on eBay.  You are welcome to contact a MOD and request the thread be locked or removed, or you could just not come back to thread if it is that important to you that no one else give their opinions.

Re: Username in item title?

I appolgize.

I'm not trying to shut anybody down.

I'm answering the question "what about buyers who..." ignore the "private" title.

Or try to buy stuff not addressed to them.

I'm surprized they needed to ask.

I now see that not all of the  last 5, were that question.

Re: Username in item title?

Some people take pride in snatching those "for xyz only" away from the intended recipient.

And if you send them a pile I would expect them to open a SNAD a send it back to you, on your dime

Re: Username in item title?

You could also set up a code word to use insread of the buyer's userID, a group of letters/numbers that really wouldn't be searchable.  As to the person who would try to snatch away another person's item, they would be worth taking a cancellation for.

I've done this quite a few times using the buyer's userID and it has worked just fine.

Re: Username in item title?

It may be just me but if I change a $20 listing to a $457.17 or BO listing and someone buys it for $457.17 I am not going to feel bad in the slightest about the customer I agreed to sell to for $20.
