Updates are happening to some item specifics and category structures

--Final Update, October 28--

The category changes announced in our Fall Seller Update have been completed.

Now that all category changes are complete, while you might still see some adjustments to searches, it is okay to update or edit your listings without concerns of losing data or having it moved again.

We appreciate your feedback on this roll-out. We'll continue to adjust the process based on the input we’ve received here, and we'll take all of these suggestions into consideration for future updates.

As this project is now complete the post is being locked from further comments.

Resources and observations

We’ve heard from you that updating your Item Specifics in time for the February 2022 requirement date may be a challenge.

A useful tool that may help is located in the Seller Hub under Listing>Active. There is a drop-down box labeled ‘Download’ which will generate an Excel document for ‘Missing Required or Recommended Item Specifics’. You can read more about this tool here.

Should you come across any inaccuracies within the new Item Specifics we ask that you report those directly to sdsupport@ebay.com so our team can investigate. Outside of that, please share suggestions as to changes you'd like to see going forward here, selecting the Categories and Item Specifics option.

---Update as of October 19th---

We apologize for this delayed update. Thank you for your patience while our teams worked to finalize category changes.

All listings have been moved to their final destination categories. You may now proceed with checking your categories, revising items, and updating item specifics where needed.

Some item specifics have been renamed, and the value you originally provided has been copied over to the new item specific, so you don’t need to re-add these item specifics. We encourage you to update your listings with item specifics that are showing as “Required Soon.” These will become required on February 22, 2022.

All other item specifics are either Recommended or Optional. Learn more about item specifics.

Some categories were retired and replaced by product-based categories. You and your buyers can still find the items you’re looking for. Simply browse to the product category of your choice and use the filters to refine your search.

More information about key category changes:

  • Dolls & Bears. The categories based on Brand/Material/Theme/Character/Franchise/Product Line/Type of doll have been retired. Former categories have been replaced by left-hand navigation filters in the new Dolls & Doll Playsets category. You can access the filters by browsing to the product category of your choice and using Brand/Vintage/Material/Theme/Character/Franchise/Product Line/Type filters to refine your search.

  • Pottery & Glass. The categories based on Brand/Origin/Production Style/Production Technique have also been replaced by filters. You and buyers can now filter by the Brand/Origin/Production Style/Production Technique/Time Period Manufactured.

  • Postcards. The categories based on Location/Theme/Subject have been retired and replaced with two main categories for Topographical and Non-Topographical postcards. The former categories have been replaced by left-hand navigation filters in the two new main categories. For example in Topographical Postcards, you can filter by Country and Region.

  • Jewelry & Watches. The categories based on Main Stone and Metal Type have been retired and replaced by product-based categories under Fine Jewelry. Use the filters for Main Stone and Metal to refine your search.

---Update as of October 14th---
The work continues on this move and is progressing according to plan. We are on track and anticipate all category changes for your listings to be complete by end of day tomorrow (10.15). Thank you for your patience while our teams implement these changes.

---Update as of October 13th---

We continue to work through this change and thank you for your patience as our teams work through it. We wanted to provide answers to some top concerns and questions:

Why are Gallery Plus fees being charged for items that were previously free?

We determined that a technical issue impacted a small number of listings, which resulted in incorrect charges (including Gallery Plus, subtitles, and insertion fees) for some sellers. The issue has been fixed and we will be crediting impacted sellers as quickly as possible. No calls to Customer Service are necessary as credits will be issued automatically.

The eBay Standard Envelope shipping option is grayed out and I can’t select it. When will the issue be resolved?

The eBay Standard Envelope shipping option issue resulted from the category changes update and has been resolved. eBay Standard Envelope is now available in applicable categories if your item meets the established criteria.

Should I edit my listings if they’re in the wrong category, have been moved to another category, or have wrong or missing item specifics?

No. Recent category changes require updates to many thousands of servers and data changes to nearly every aspect of our platform. This level of adjustment takes time, which is why we asked for your patience while the process runs. We expect most data updates to be completed within 48 hours, but can they take up to a week (i.e., through Oct. 19). After that, if you have an item specific in mind that you think would work well for your listing, please consider adding it as a custom item specific.

Why isn’t my item coming up in search?

The category change update is still in process. We anticipate search issues will resolve when we complete most data updates during the next 24-48 hours.

There are more item specifics now than ever before. Do I need to fill in all of them?

No. Item specifics that you have already filled in will be maintained as the category moves are completed during the next week. In addition, new soon-to-be-required item specifics are being added and will become required by Feb 22, 2022. As always, the more item specifics you fill out, the better visibility your listing has to buyers.

For Parts & Accessories, when will fitment/compatibility charts start working again?

There was an issue with parts compatibility not working properly as the category changes rolled out that has been resolved. You should now be able to see the options to add fitment compatibility when editing your listings.

-----------------------------------------------------------

We’re updating some of our categories and item specifics to make your listings easier to find.

Starting October 12th, you’ll see updates to the following categories. Learn more about category changes →

Collectibles & Art

Jewelry

Musical Instruments

Parts & Accessories

Sporting Goods

As these updates go into effect, you may see temporary impacts to your listing experience or to the visibility of listings in the affected categories.

This is a result of listings transitioning to the updated item specifics and category structures. Your affected listings should return to normal within 48 hours, though you may see irregularities on some listings for up to a week. We recommend checking your item specifics and categories in affected listings after these updates are complete.

These updates also include new item specifics in the above categories, which will be required February 22, 2022. Starting today, these item specifics will be available as you list, with the “Required Soon” tag. Learn more →

Keep an eye on this page over the coming days—we’ll be sharing up-to-date information on affected categories and listings, and answering any questions you have.

Re: Updates are happening to some item specifics and category structures

OK. Changes were implemented on 10-12. It is now 10-16. My items are still in the wrong categories, Item Specifics are still missing, & eBay still hasn't paid back the 375 Gallery Plus listing fees that were debited from my account. First it was gong to take 2 days, now we are up to a week. Sales have tanked. With over 17,00 listings, I have spent months adding IS to my listings. I WILL NOT add them again, so eBay better figure this one out! Or, I will accept a years worth of Anchor fees credited as compensation. I want my Gallery Plus fees credited with INTEREST! I want my items put in the correct categories - not an antique opalescent glass bowl now listed as a vase, for example!  And eBay, DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT ASKING IF I WOULD RECOMMEND SELLING ON EBAY TO OTHERS! That is a big, fat NO! What a fiasco!

Re: Updates are happening to some item specifics and category structures

I have noticed that ebay has made category changes. Most items I have up for sale have been automatically placed in categories that don't even seem to apply to the items I am selling. Specifics I had entered have disapperared. Also, as a buyer myself, buyers don't want to have to search through excessive items to find what they are looking for!!! Once again, my sales plummet as they always seem to do when ebay makes changes. What makes staff think category changes were a good idea? I do not mean to sound rude or anything, but I must say most changes I have encountered over the years have not had favorable results, & it is turning me off more & more every time changes are implemented. No exposure, managed payments, fees, & now category changes. Its like beating my head against a wall trying to sell items 😞 Good grief!

I'm with you!!! Sick of changes that do NOT help!!! Sticking my items in categories that don't even apply to what I am trying to sell make NO sense!!!

Eliminating the categories/subcategories seems completely unnecessary. No new bids on any of my items since this change. I can't understand why this decision was made, it makes no sense.  Requiring additional item specifics is one thing, but why couldn't we use these item specifics with the old category structure? I can't believe that this wouldn't have been possible.

Well, I’m going to guess that sellers of collectibles, antiques etc. didn’t fill in item specifics unless absolutely necessary. Why? Because they didn’t lead to more sales AND as a buyer we NEVER USE THEM.  I would always fill in a few obvious ones (brand, size) just in case, but since I never found them helpful (ever) when buying myself, I knew they weren’t what my customers wanted.

My last collector “buying frenzy”  we all know what I’m talking about, collectors) was of a modern miniatures collectible called ReMent.  EVERY single morning and night, I would browse the 2 categories they were in, first the ENDING SOONEST and then the NEWLY LISTED.  I never ONCE looked at ONE item specific.  Not once, in thousands of dollars of buying.

I can still browse ReMent in search right now, but I can’t browse antique dolls or vintage Barbie effectively AT ALL. Even looking up prices for listing dolls is a frustrating mess.

Re: Updates are happening to some item specifics and category structures

I’m getting charged for revising items.  I usually adjust my prices higher for 4th quarter but it’s trying to charge me hundreds of dollars to make the change. I contacted help over a week ago but it’s still happening. When will this be fixed and will the charges on my account come off automatically or go I need to report each overcharge to your help desk? Thank you. What a mess this change has been.

Re: Updates are happening to some item specifics and category structures

Using more specifics MAY help a buyer find the SPECIFC item they ae searching. BUT killing off over 2000 categories and subcategories has essentially killed of the ability to browse for a type of item.  Looks like eBay wants a buyer to in find the one thing they want and get out. It would be like going to the grocery store, and someone meets you at the door and asks what you want. You say milk, they get it for you and then say get the hell out. But stores do not do that, they put milk at the back and have all kinds of things for yo to look at on you way to it. Knowing browsers buy MORE. Guess eBay wants LESS.

Re: Updates are happening to some item specifics and category structures

This is all so frustrating and on top of it all, I can't even list Postcards or Small coins/Tokens right now because eBay Standard Envelope is still not an available delivery option for these items yet.

Re: Updates are happening to some item specifics and category structures

This fiasco is a mirror image of what they did in October 2019. I listed an antique vintage dress (then they were "upgrading clothing, I mean destroying clothing) and my choices were plastic and brass. People need to google or try and go to ebay archives to see what they did in 2019.

This ALL has to do with still trying to do a one size fits all product catalogue to match Amazon which is a complete failure.

Re: Updates are happening to some item specifics and category structures

Back in 2017 I had trouble with ebay not showing my items in Google Shop which was a perk having a store. Had a 40's vintage dress as an example. The official ebay Blue told me I had to enter some MRPN, G something code from the dress...he had no clue a 40's dress would not ever ever have any code except maybe a WPL . They had no clue then, and no clue now.

Re: Updates are happening to some item specifics and category structures

What eBay is doing is like going to the grocery store to buy coffee and hearing the clerk say that coffee can probably be found on aisles 1 thru 28.

They didn't do it in 2019. About all they MAY do is fix the fiasco charging for Gallery. Won't hold my breath.

Re: Updates are happening to some item specifics and category structures

In my 20 years with Ebay this is by far the worst decision ever! The doll category change makes it impossible to find what a collector is looking for.  Antique doll collectors will not be bothered looking through thousands of listings.  Unless this change is reversed Ebay will lose thousands of faithful buyers & sellers who have made Ebay success over many years!

Re: Updates are happening to some item specifics and category structures

You hit the nail on the head...if you wish to purchase nails, just search tools...sharp pointy objects...metal....made between 1950-1959. The changes in Collectibles and even Toys are proving to be

a mess. For instance , I used to browse Collecibles, Holiday and Seasonal for vintage Halloween items. I could narrow it down easily to Holiday, Halloween, Vintage and browse for great items. How I must whittle it down from Holiday to occasion...which results in thousands of items. Then you must choose time period of manufacture. REALLY! It looks to me like sellers are holding back great vintage items because they do not think they will be found by buyers. The same thing happens if I want to browse action figures....they are all lumped together. I used to go to comic or superhero to search for great examples of obscure figures or to help identify something I had, but now it is one big mess.
