Updates are happening to some item specifics and category structures

--Final Update, October 28--

The category changes announced in our Fall Seller Update have been completed.

Now that all category changes are complete, while you might still see some adjustments to searches, it is okay to update or edit your listings without concerns of losing data or having it moved again.

We appreciate your feedback on this roll-out. We'll continue to adjust the process based on the input we’ve received here, and we'll take all of these suggestions into consideration for future updates.

As this project is now complete the post is being locked from further comments.

Resources and observations

We’ve heard from you that updating your Item Specifics in time for the February 2022 requirement date may be a challenge.

A useful tool that may help is located in the Seller Hub under Listing>Active. There is a drop-down box labeled ‘Download’ which will generate an Excel document for ‘Missing Required or Recommended Item Specifics’. You can read more about this tool here.

Should you come across any inaccuracies within the new Item Specifics we ask that you report those directly to sdsupport@ebay.com so our team can investigate. Outside of that, please share suggestions as to changes you'd like to see going forward here, selecting the Categories and Item Specifics option.

---Update as of October 19th---

We apologize for this delayed update. Thank you for your patience while our teams worked to finalize category changes.

All listings have been moved to their final destination categories. You may now proceed with checking your categories, revising items, and updating item specifics where needed.

Some item specifics have been renamed, and the value you originally provided has been copied over to the new item specific, so you don’t need to re-add these item specifics. We encourage you to update your listings with item specifics that are showing as “Required Soon.” These will become required on February 22, 2022.

All other item specifics are either Recommended or Optional. Learn more about item specifics.

Some categories were retired and replaced by product-based categories. You and your buyers can still find the items you’re looking for. Simply browse to the product category of your choice and use the filters to refine your search.

More information about key category changes:

  • Dolls & Bears. The categories based on Brand/Material/Theme/Character/Franchise/Product Line/Type of doll have been retired. Former categories have been replaced by left-hand navigation filters in the new Dolls & Doll Playsets category. You can access the filters by browsing to the product category of your choice and using Brand/Vintage/Material/Theme/Character/Franchise/Product Line/Type filters to refine your search.

  • Pottery & Glass. The categories based on Brand/Origin/Production Style/Production Technique have also been replaced by filters. You and buyers can now filter by the Brand/Origin/Production Style/Production Technique/Time Period Manufactured.

  • Postcards. The categories based on Location/Theme/Subject have been retired and replaced with two main categories for Topographical and Non-Topographical postcards. The former categories have been replaced by left-hand navigation filters in the two new main categories. For example in Topographical Postcards, you can filter by Country and Region.

  • Jewelry & Watches. The categories based on Main Stone and Metal Type have been retired and replaced by product-based categories under Fine Jewelry. Use the filters for Main Stone and Metal to refine your search.

---Update as of October 14th---
The work continues on this move and is progressing according to plan. We are on track and anticipate all category changes for your listings to be complete by end of day tomorrow (10.15). Thank you for your patience while our teams implement these changes.

---Update as of October 13th---

We continue to work through this change and thank you for your patience as our teams work through it. We wanted to provide answers to some top concerns and questions:

Why are Gallery Plus fees being charged for items that were previously free?

We determined that a technical issue impacted a small number of listings, which resulted in incorrect charges (including Gallery Plus, subtitles, and insertion fees) for some sellers. The issue has been fixed and we will be crediting impacted sellers as quickly as possible. No calls to Customer Service are necessary as credits will be issued automatically.

The eBay Standard Envelope shipping option is grayed out and I can’t select it. When will the issue be resolved?

The eBay Standard Envelope shipping option issue resulted from the category changes update and has been resolved. eBay Standard Envelope is now available in applicable categories if your item meets the established criteria.

Should I edit my listings if they’re in the wrong category, have been moved to another category, or have wrong or missing item specifics?

No. Recent category changes require updates to many thousands of servers and data changes to nearly every aspect of our platform. This level of adjustment takes time, which is why we asked for your patience while the process runs. We expect most data updates to be completed within 48 hours, but can they take up to a week (i.e., through Oct. 19). After that, if you have an item specific in mind that you think would work well for your listing, please consider adding it as a custom item specific.

Why isn’t my item coming up in search?

The category change update is still in process. We anticipate search issues will resolve when we complete most data updates during the next 24-48 hours.

There are more item specifics now than ever before. Do I need to fill in all of them?

No. Item specifics that you have already filled in will be maintained as the category moves are completed during the next week. In addition, new soon-to-be-required item specifics are being added and will become required by Feb 22, 2022. As always, the more item specifics you fill out, the better visibility your listing has to buyers.

For Parts & Accessories, when will fitment/compatibility charts start working again?

There was an issue with parts compatibility not working properly as the category changes rolled out that has been resolved. You should now be able to see the options to add fitment compatibility when editing your listings.

-----------------------------------------------------------

We’re updating some of our categories and item specifics to make your listings easier to find.

Starting October 12th, you’ll see updates to the following categories. Learn more about category changes →

Collectibles & Art

Jewelry

Musical Instruments

Parts & Accessories

Sporting Goods

As these updates go into effect, you may see temporary impacts to your listing experience or to the visibility of listings in the affected categories.

This is a result of listings transitioning to the updated item specifics and category structures. Your affected listings should return to normal within 48 hours, though you may see irregularities on some listings for up to a week. We recommend checking your item specifics and categories in affected listings after these updates are complete.

These updates also include new item specifics in the above categories, which will be required February 22, 2022. Starting today, these item specifics will be available as you list, with the “Required Soon” tag. Learn more →

Keep an eye on this page over the coming days—we’ll be sharing up-to-date information on affected categories and listings, and answering any questions you have.

Re: Updates are happening to some item specifics and category structures

I have over 1,100 listings that are Collectables & Glass. It is one thing to have to add required item specifics to all of them, but to make it an even bigger spit in the face, you decided to automatically move them into categories that are no where near correct! So now I have to re-enter 100 percent of the item's specifics. You might as well have just shut down my account & told me to start over. It is literally the same thing.

I should be focusing on listing new items, but instead I'm putting back together all my listings from scratch!

You all are so brain dead to think this will actually become a positive change in the short & long run. You can only push your buyers & sellers so much before they abandon you. #crooks

Leave things alone, you lack the brain power to improve things & lack the ears to listen to your community.

Re: Updates are happening to some item specifics and category structures

The current CEO is the only person they could find to take the job after the last CEO was forced out over 6 high ranking executives being told be him to take down eCommerceBytes at all cost for publishing factual articles about eBay

. That landed the head of eBay's Global Security in Federal Prison as well as the other 5 are going to prison. The new CEO is from Wal-Mart and is hiring other Wal-Mart executives to run eBay into the ground. The current CEO is the person who ruined the Nook. They all have no clue about collectibles, and vintage anything, nor do the seem to care at all. It also looks like there are tons of buyers also complaining. No one can find a thing with the searches. It was terrible before they did this now it's so far below terrible that I don't even know what to call it except eBay!

At least the picked the best time of the year to force sellers to do a lot of extra work.

@community_team How about instead of changing categories that need not be messed with before Q4 YOU SPEND TIME ADVERTISITNG EBAY! I've noticed over the past month that I have not seen one Ebay ad on the television or on the internet at all. Not one. And you ask anyone in public where they shop online and they will say Amazon. If you mention Ebay you get a dirty look and a sold NO. Is that really where this company is headed.... a sour taste in everyone's mouth that many will soon forget?

You are really pissing off not only your sellers (which put food on your corporate tables while we starve for crumbs), but not you are forcing customers to shop elsewhere.

Who in their right mind thinks this is a good business plan? I mean seriously, what are the qualifications to work at Ebay because it is not based in business/accounting/marketing/advertisting/customer service/retail applications at all.

Re: Updates are happening to some item specifics and category structures

I just typed "military postcards" into the search for anything tab at the top, 55,121 results (know I didn't look to see if there were that many 😋, I'm sure by page 3 it would wander off into military grade light bulbs or some other unrelated item).

Re: Updates are happening to some item specifics and category structures

Don't waste you time on eBay For Business. Laura J on their told me my name was not on my own account, which is crazy. Then she said it was my fault I was charge an extra $1 for Gallery View on dozens of listings because I used that option. Sad part is those are free for the items I was charged the extra $1 for. They were all postcards in the Collectibles section. eBay For Business didn't fix my issue at all. They just blamed me for their issues. They also lost the original chat after talking to the 6th person at eBay.

Re: Updates are happening to some item specifics and category structures

They are stating this could go on for a week, which by eBay's understanding of time would equates to a year in normal people time.

Re: Updates are happening to some item specifics and category structures

He is also responsible for killing the Nook, which should have banned him from any CEO spot on the globe. But I guess when no one else would take the spot (due to the Federal Charges against many eBay top executives including their head of global security for the whole company) the only option you have is Wal-Mart. Look up eBay Federal Charges eCommercyBytes if you don't know what I'm talking about. They attacked a very nice couple for just posting truthful article about eBay issues just like this. This guy knows nothing about the site nor collectibles in general.

This is nothing more than a way for eBay to capitalize on the NEW Pay Per Click. This way they can specifically only show what they want to sellers. I think more buyers will leave then sellers. They don't need the income so they can shop anywhere they wish.

Re: Updates are happening to some item specifics and category structures

Well, I did say SOME people have more success there. I wish I could say I was surprised. So many poorly trained cs reps, just reading the prompts off a screen. Maybe another class action lawsuit is due. It sure would not be ebay's first. Save those chat sessions as obviously ebay would like to bury them. They can not charge you for something you did not know about and had no chance to make changes in advance. smh

Get back with Customer Service about this.  I've called 3 times, and each time the $1 Gallery Plus fees have been refunded for my postcards in the Collectibles section.  If you run into problems, tell the CS rep to look up SR# 1-391803283506, the service request number of my 2nd call that got 6 Gallery Plus fees refunded and also reported a problem of missing items on the Computer Friendly Order report of Sales History when there are over 11 items are on the order.

Re: Updates are happening to some item specifics and category structures

Sure they did tell us things were going to change, but they never said buyers wouldn't be able to look for our items for a week, or that they would wrongly charge us for Gallery Views that are free, nor that we would have our shipping options removed, and etc. They also didn't even tell the help desk of potential issues. This morning they had eBay UK help responding to help chat.

This is all done so that they can completely control what is shown to buyers so they can push Pay Per Click, and the old promoted listings. it's so obvious as this is how Wal-Mart runs, which if you don't know the CEO is from Wal-Mart and he's brought it many other from Wal-Mart. eBay is turning into Wal-Mart 2.0.

Another site will replace them at some point with these sorts of changes. Buyers will be the ones leaving the most since they clearly wont want to waste their time searching through junk that has no relationship with their search terms.

I talked to 5 different people, and they were rude to say the least. I have an Anchor store so I will call them directly.
