Updated Community Guidelines

sheila@ebay
eBay Staff (Alumni)

Hello Community,

We want to make the Community a safe and enjoyable place for all to come participate and learn from one another. The Community team has recently updated the Community Guidelines. You can find them here.

I'll keep this post up for until the end of day on July 6th for feedback on the Guidelines.

Thank you for participating in Community!

Re: Updated Community Guidelines

I find this interesting.  mam98031 in past email has suggested I sell somewhere else if I was so unhappy with the platform.  My how times change.  Everyone that is on the board for any period of time has seen that comment.  If we don't have free speech we have nothing as a country or a community board.  You can use an old AA term "take what you want and leave the rest".  Now that really applies to this Community.  This thing is going to get so sterile you will be in violation for signing on to it.

Where is our fearless leader sheila@ebay ?  Any takeaways from this rather lengthy thread?

Give her time.  It is the first day after a long weekend.  It is likely she has all kinds of things going on.

Can we get a clarification on what kind of stories are acceptable on the seller board? I can write fun stories that would entertain many veteran sellers, but they would be about the community shills who might cry and report their feelings.

I for one would love to know the back story on that adorable goat you’re holding. Thanks for the update

Say you have a story about watches or handbags. We have a watches and handbags board where you can post. That would be on topic for the board. For any other topics, where we don't have a board, I plan on creating an off topic board for you to share stories. Would love to hear about the fun stories you have in mind!

The baby goat that I'm holding in the picture is only two weeks old and it loved getting cuddled! 😊 Sweetest thing I've ever held.

I will have to try to remember the post# thing.  I'm to old to change my ways of reading, and must read down a page, as the other way makes no sense .......  to me.

Yes I did.  I don't however believe we have ever shared emails, it was all posts mostly on the MP board when it existed.  You are talking about posts for over 2 years ago I believe.  When you were blowing up the Managed Payments board with how unhappy and dissatisfied you were with MP and Ebay.

As in most things on Ebay, things change.  Not sure why that is a surprise.

No one has "free speech" on or in the Ebay community.  This is Ebay's platform and they set the rules.  You have never been able to say anything you heart desires here.  Same on other similar sites, they have rules for their communities too.

Re: Updated Community Guidelines

Your statements make it clear that eBay has no interest in fixing what is wrong with the platform.  It appears they want this Community Board to be apple pie and Chevrolet .  It also seems you blow with the eBay wind.  Perhaps there should be a board for those Sellers that have millions of dollars of product on the shelves and do millions of dollars of sale on this platform.  Keep in mind its those folks that supply 40% of the eBay net income.  In the past 6+ years eBay has eroded net income for all that sell on the platform.  Not complaining as you would say, just stating facts.  Those in power believe its better to not let the platform grow organically.  Its more profitable to live in the short term gain arena and deal with what happens with that tactic when sales head way down.  Its started, management has managed to, in the past two years, to get the stock price to $77+ and now with there management plan have managed to get the stock to $42.55 two days ago.  Their success plans just do not work.  Those are the stock market numbers not mine.  Now you will say its the economy.  In hard times people look for deals and can find them on eBay, they don't shop at the mall.  COVID proved  that.  In my business, computer spare parts, we do twice normal volume in a bad economy.  We are currently down 60% on eBay, we are down 1 million + impressions a day.  This board has become hear no evil, speak no evil, see no evil.  That's how countries are taken over.

Sheila - I would like to seek clarity on the following:

  • promoting off-eBay sites, groups, or forums, or suggestions that encourage users to leave eBay

Often, a poster will start a thread about wanting to "sell" something of really high value or something that is large and inappropriate to try and ship (i.e. would need to be freighted) and/OR the item(s) they are posting about are items that truly as a ""brand new" seller, would make them an immediate scam "target" (i.e. XBOX systems, PS5's, Computer hardware, crypto-miners, Latest & Greatest I-phones (new), etc etc)

The responses on the board are typically 1 of 4 things:

a) Consider selling the item(s) locally

b) Do not sell these types of items at all online on this (or any) site

c) Do not sell these types of items "now" - wait and build up your profile

d) Online selling is not for you - these types of items are SCAM magnets

Based on the 4 comments above and the bulleted stated board "offense", are these 4 statements considered to be in violation of the community guidelines as now outlined?

BTW, it is often wondered on these boards how "new" sellers are even able to list HV items at all, but often, they can, while others have very low thresholds for the item total(s) when they start out.  A mystery for sure and a type of thread that comes up really often on the Selling board.

Thank you in advance.

Katz

@katzrul15 this is a tricky one, but I wouldn't consider these examples a violation as they're off eBay sales.

Thank you, but I was asking Sheila (or Brian, etc) for an official board response.  brian@ebay

I have read the prior language (thank you @valueaddedresource ) and the reviewed the current links posted by sheila@ebay multiple times.  Thus, the question.

I am asking the Community Manager to clarify based on my post and the types of threads that are frequent on this board.

No offense to you, but not wishing to debate this with other posters.  Sheila indicated to ask for clarification and that is the purpose of my post.  Debating this on any level does not lend clarity - Would like for those who updated the Community Guidelines to address so that for future threads, it is known what parameters make sense and which violate board policy.

sheila@ebay

Is this thread for an open exchange of ideas among members, or are responses limited to only replies to you?

It's an open exchange and if one of us are tagged, we'll jump in. This is quite a long thread and with the holiday weekend, we're trying to catch up.

All feedback will be noted and I'll consider modifying the guidelines as needed in the future.

Why is that sorting doesn’t work in this thread? I am set to newest to oldest and still see posts from 6/29 on top first. Then I go down and I see I am landing on page 8 instead of 1.

@partfinds how do you have sorting set up? Can you post a separate post on this board, so I can look at it? Can you include screenshots?

There's a potential bug that we're looking into that might be related to what you're experiencing.

I have came across Rockstar's and their contribution is mostly based on Helpful Votes Given to Others.  I have also seen Rockstar's  that only have Helpful Votes Given but have no Posts, ...

eBay doesn't reveal the exact formula for bestowing those titles, but it's somehow based on community participation.

@nobody*s_perfect these ranks were implemented long before I joined and I'm not a fan of them. I need to do some digging to see how Community members progress up the ranks, so I'll take a look at this sometime the later half of this year.

Share, celebrate… and have fun!

Buying and selling on eBay isn’t the only thing that is important to you. Share your hobby, or complain about your pet peeve. Celebrate your latest thrifting score, or post a death pile photo. This community welcomes hearing about your latest personal triumph, a moment where you need support, or just an amazing meal you made (in the appropriate forum). This community is designed to connect people, and the more we get to know each other, the more our businesses will grow together.

Mr. L

A death pile is a pile of stuff that you want to sell but haven't gotten around to listing yet, but yet it keeps growing and growing. It's the pile you tend to give the evil eye too. 😉
