USPS "Insurance" is worthless

USPS lost a $125 item, tracking never showed delivered, filed the claim on 2/19, denied on 3/18, reason will be sent by letter.

I did not purchase any insurance because I already knew it was worthless but I I assumed I would get the $100 of included insurance.

Any idea why it would of been denied?

I did one got. Got denial letter with reason. Needed proof of value. Proof of the selling transaction itself.

@bashort

Where (city/state) did you ship this?

Did you submit it?  My recent denials from USPS have been via email (for an insurance claim submitted online). The product sold for $295, and I was only asking for the $100 included with the shipping cost.   They said I had to take the letter AND the smashed up product to the Post Office to which it was delivered for inspection.  I questioned that saying the "buyer provided photos....yada yada.."  but NO.

Apparently, they expected ME to travel from Virginia to Nashville, recover the parcel and bring it in to the receiving Post Office in TN.    My buyer was 83 years old, got a 25 lb.+ package of pottery that looked like it was run over by a truck.

I just refunded my customer.  The only redeeming feature was it was NOT an eBay sale, I did not get any dings or defects nor lowering of my visibility on Google.  LOL.

I quit wasting my time on USPS shipping damage claims long ago, this was a lost package.

I included the ebay invoice as proof of value

Mine was for a "lost" item.

I had the usps lose a GA package of mine.

I thought to myself ... slam dunk.

I should have no problem winning this claim.

My claim was denied because i need to prove the value of my item.

I copy of the ebay transaction would not suffice.

Apparently if I sell a item for $25, then ship it, then they lose it, it's not worth $25.

I've never been denied for 'nonsense' reasons.  And 2 of these were damage claims (paid)!

The 2 that were denied (both 'lost' claims) .... well one you can see did get delivered; my claim seemed to help them "find" the package and move it along to the buyer, and the other one (the 'frog pictures') never had an acceptance scan; it was probably stolen from my porch before my mailman came to do my pickup that day.

Until you see what that letter says, it's a bit early to know whether you have something to be angry about.

The item in question I do not have anything that shows what I paid for it because I bought it in a package deal.  What I paid is completely irrelevant anyway, the items value is what someone was willing to pay for it, its not like I can just order up another one for the same price I gave for the lost one.

I had a $40 claim that they paid with no questions. submitted the same way.

So it appears that a big % of the items sold on ebay are not insurable.

I wish that they would  just eliminate that $100 of "free" insurance,m

"Appears" -based on what?  You haven't seen the denial reason yet!   Might have nothing to do with the type of item it was.

What did you use as your "copy of the transaction"?  For me a screenshot of the Order Details page has always worked just fine.  But if you just showed ... I dunno, something from the Payments page or only the most basic view from Orders, then maybe that's why they denied it.

I figure it's better to give them more info than they could possibly need, and it seems to work well for me anyway.

I had this happen for a $20 package which they destroyed.  In fact they sent me  the label in a clear plastic bag and told me that was all that was left of the item (it was magazines).  I thought easy peasy and would have no problems.  I included the Ebay invoice to the customer and a copy of the plastic bag.   After I was denied twice I called the corporate USPS office and they told me they needed to see the payment received.  I then sent it again including the Ebay page showing payment and finally got my $20.00.  They don't tell you this unless you ask what they need.  The local PO has nothing to do with the insurance and are basically clueless regarding insurance.   Hope this helps!

Strange- just went through this. Used the ebay listing (blue 10 digit number, clicked, saved using PrntScrn, then 'pasted' using Paint; then submitted) for the value ($132 with shipping) and got a check for $109 ($100 plus the $9 shipping) for Ground Advantage- no additional insurance.

Very easy.
