Two posts today from angry folks because of another listing they saw....

I noticed two separate posts today from folks upset because of something they saw in another persons listing. Don't want to hijack their threads so thought I'd start my own. One was about price gouging, which wasn't price gouging at all but just people who resell items for a higher price- aka business. Another was because someone felt that people were selling items they'd created in their own homes without licensing agreements on copyrighted material.

What someone else is doing in their listings displeases them, so they now feel entitled to "tell on them". Neither of those two posters had any rebuttals either.

One tried to claim it was the equivalent to seeing a child being abused and failing to report it. Yes, that is correct, that OP felt that when he sees someone selling a homemade replica Star Wars item and he cannot report them, that it is the equivalent of seeing physical harm being done to a living creature.

Reminds me of someone I used to know named Charlie. Many years ago Charlie called me extremely upset because a woman was parking her car so closely to the car next to her, it made opening the drivers door difficult. Naturally I presumed he was the driver of the other car, so I suggested he write a nicely worded note and place it on her windshield. That's when he told me it wasn't his car she was parking next to.

After a long pause, I asked him why this was upsetting him if he wasn't the owner of the other car. He said it was because the woman had no right to do that....she was in the wrong. After another longer pause, I replied that perhaps the woman had spoken to the actual driver of the other car in advance. Perhaps the woman was disabled, or a larger person, who needed extra room to open her door wider, so she got permission to park closer to the car on her right. Perhaps the other driver was making an exception for this woman. I pointed out that since he hadn't spoken to either of these people, he had no way of knowing the full story, so there was no reason for him to get so worked up. Charlie hung up on me....

That's really the main problem with some people today, including my own Mother. Sorry Mom. I am 64 yrs old and people are always trying to tell me what to do. I broke my wife of that a year ago after she finally heard me. Stay in your lane is the phrase today.  It means mind your own business. I get a few people messaging me on eBay telling how I should sell something, etc. Just who the H are they to tell me how to run my business, especially after over 40 years of running it successfully? Leave people alone and quit trying to tell them how to live. It's none of your business and you have no right to be doing so. It is so sad that people think they have to get in your face all the time over anything or nothing. Have a great day!

Yeah...

I believe I replied to one of those members in their thread..

If people would pay more attention to what they themselves are doing and not what everybody else is doing, the world and eBay would be much better off.

In our house we call it: "personal responsibility"  and we even extend it to our dog. When she starts barking outside because another dog, in the distance, is barking, we tell her to "mind yer own business."  It actually works for the most part..

I think Michael had it right! Start with the man in the mirror (or woman). Another favorite saying of mine.

Amen to that....

That's hysterical, I love it....

Lovely, nice way to acknowledge Michael....

I get lots of calls at work from people who aren't minding their own business. The one this week is people who get their insurance broker to call and give us heck because no one called their client yet.

Um, we have 1000 new claims thanks to a hail storm in Alberta. We have 35 agents receiving incoming calls. All your repeated calls to ask why no one is calling your client is tying up the phones so that we don't have the opportunity to do call outs.

I then tell them to expedite this, tell the client to call themselves (because we need to speak to them, not their broker) and we will talk to them right away - when we answer. The broker complains that they waited an hour on hold just to complain to me about the lack of call outs to their client and it's not fair their client needs to wait on hold.

Fine, don't wait on hold for an hour. Wait 3-5 days until we get through the glut of claims and get around to calling them. Here's a hint, don't tie up our phone lines for the purpose of complaining. We don't want to speak to you.

Unfortunately I can't say most of that, I have to be polite. If you annoy the brokers they will pull their business and get insurance elsewhere. What gets me is how dumbfounded people are that a severe hailstorm would result in a lot of roof claims. "But I'm in another province!" It doesn't matter, our agents work across Canada to serve all of Canada.

Just like any situation where one has to use their common sense and gut, it can go either way.

There is a definite shift in people and their behaviors. Not necessarily for the positive, unfortunately. Disagreements are part of life. Learning to agree to disagree is a skill best learned early.

Kindness matters, always....

Then there are the post demanding "the" phone number for eBay.

Because their problem is too complex to explain to a machine.

My usual reply to those is to state the usual problems - Unpaid Item/Item Not Received/ Scammy buyer wants to return "perfect" item and how to deal with them.

Basically the Resolution Centre.

Most never seem to come back.

I don't know if they are insulted or embarrassed.

Or restating a rant, showing what was left out.

Or highlighting where the ranter went wrong.

Same responses.

Not sure if I'm doing it right or wrong.

One thing I have noticed, responses vary depending on which ID and avatar I happen to be using. This one gets more angry responses than my "masculine" one. And one which has a rather girly avatar gets even more disrespect.

Sigh. Kids today.

@femmefan1946

Things have changed. Now all that sneaky sexism, racism and ugly is blatant.

I must say that my concern is for what we are becoming as people.  I try to live in a way that my grandchildren may look back on and emulate.

We are each responsible for who we are, and must remember that is all that we leave with.

Okay....sorry..I'm done.

I call it "boundaries".  Some don't know the meaning of boundaries, and often exceed them online where it is easy to do, and to get away with.

@femmefan1946 Oh yes, because of my avatar I have been called "Black Barbie" "Black (b-word)", and other racist type names, and I am Caucasian.  People feel the need to associate a visual with who they are speaking to or addressing online, so they base it on the avatar. Plus now it's more common for people to call names online and hide behind 1st amendment claims....

OMGosh!!

That makes me really sad.. Really sad..

I didn't even think about it one way or the other. I know you post about dolls so I just figured twas a doll you fancied.

I'm really sorry to read that.

My son's current GF is half black and she was afraid to go around with him in our small town. She thought people would be well, let's face it, racist. First I told her not to worry because if they said anything, it would be the last thing they said to her- my son wont have it and I certainly wont have it.

But mostly our town is not like that- she loves it here and has never had any issues.

People online can be horrible. The Internet is both the best of things and the worst of things.

It's not just race people discriminate against. People like to discriminate against me or my partner because of the age difference. IMO, I'm over 40, I can decide for myself who I want to be in a relationship with. It's not as though I'm barely an adult and being taken advantage of.

What's important is that we have a lot in common (both running our own businesses) and I help him with administrative work for his company because he needs an occasional assistant, not someone who depends on a regular paycheck. He's interested in my coins and stamps and we talk about it a lot. He knows a lot about history which we associate with the coins and stamps. (My ex husband is pretty much the same way.) He has values that I respect and I happen to be exactly what he's looking for in a relationship. I also knew him for 6 years before we started seeing each other, so I know all about his bad habits and shortcomings. Nothing surprises me anymore.

There is actually a legitimate reason for people to want to do this one. Many times, copyright holders will look the other way when it comes to fans making items like that-- as long as they are not making a profit off them. The moment people start trying to use someone else's copyrighted material to make a profit, it can bring the wrath of the company down on the heads of fans-- ALL of the fans, not just the ones who are trying to use it to make money, and so the company can start aggressively sending C&Ds to everyone who makes unauthorized replicas, etc. even if they aren't profiting off them.

It's like the Japanese doujinshi culture: there is an entire culture of fan-made comic books based on TV series and the like in Japan, and the companies who own those shows look the other way because it's understood that you don't charge any more for the comic books than it costs to actually print them. They see it as good advertising and it doesn't harm them in any way as long as the artists aren't raking in the money with their fan-made items. But you can bet they'd swoop in and shut things down if people turned it into an actual profit-making venture, which would ruin everything for everyone else.

Selling stuff based on someone else's copyrighted material is a very iffy thing and a lot of fans don't like the idea at all because they don't want to lose the ability to make their own stuff for fun, not profit, which can happen if the company decides they are going to go after creators of fanworks.
