A buyer claims the battery to the camera I sent is defective. They are threatening me with negative feedback if O don't issue them a partial refund. The buyer's words in an email to me are:
"...unless u can indicate anything to the contrary in your description or offer a partial refund for new battery purchase i will be forced to give a negative review..."
Is this kind of written threat allowed on ebay. I'd be glad to accept the item back for a full refund. But I'm not confidant the buyer isn't shaking me down. Can I just tell them the option I'll accept is for them to return the item for a full refund?

That is a no no and against eBay policy. If you have received that in an email report the buyer and tell them to check your emails, they can do that.

Why not just say, "Sorry you're unhappy. Please return for refund"?

Feedback Extortion is not allowed: https://www.ebay.com/help/policies/feedback-policies/feedback-extortion-policy?id=4230
As for responding to the customer. "I'm sorry you are unsatisfied with your purchase. Please use your menu options to request a Return. I will approve the Return, and once the item has been received back I will issue a full refund." OR... similar. If they are just trying to shake you down, they may never actually submit for a Return, or, if they do they may never actually send the item back and then you wouldn't need to refund.
My opinion, if it's actually defective they wouldn't be asking for a partial return.

You can just BBL and ignore them until they leave the negative and this one is slam dunk for removal. I'd bet even an overseas CSR can take care of it with one call.

@sitonmycar You are correct that this would qualify for feedback extortion. Do not get into any back and forth with this buyer. All of your messages can/will be read so tread lightly. You should just reply return for a full refund and be done with it. If they return exactly as purchased, then handle that and block them. If they were to leave any negative comments, then proceed with contacting eBay to get that removed. Always keep your selling account at forefront of your decisions and keep emotions out of it. Best of luck to you....

Why not report the buyer so the next seller does not have to put up with this?

My only response would be, "Please return for a full refund"
No back and forth. No apology. No explanation. No letting him bully me.
I'd answer him exactly one time. Please return.

You should have offered the buyer a partial refund -or- a return for a full refund.
That being said, that threat is clearly against policy and should you get a negative feedback, they'll remove it.
Of course that doesn't exempt you from a return or a chargeback since the buyer is unhappy.

That is no answer to my question, Why not report him and let eBay take care of it?

You can always suggest a full refund, but the buyer does not need your blessing to start an NAD claim. He can do that and leave negative feedback. Having the feedback removed is open to interpretation by CS and we all know how that goes. I think he is pretty specific in the fact he wants you to pay for a new battery. If he wanted a refund he would just file a claim. Good Luck

In the future never sell anything with batteries already installed. I sell a lot of cameras that require batteries. I always note in the description that "Batteries are not included"
