The scam cost me as a seller 1300 pounds! stolen item from the box.

The Scam

The buyer purchases my antique doll  as normal. I ship the item to the buyer as normal. When he receives the item, he opens an eBay dispute and claims that I sent her a doll without a head (most valuable item), and naked dolls body on the box. eBay forces a return only the body, the buyer wants  ships back only the body it coat about 50 pounds, and keeps the item that was inside. I made a photos during the packaging with the doll inside. I contacted ebay. What also I can do? P.S. the byer wrote what I am a thief and what her father is Mafioso and will came for me and my family. please help.2.jpgs-l1600.jpg

If you sold in pounds sterling, you sold on the UK site.

You should be appealing the case on the UK site, where UK laws apply.

I believe USPS postal inspectors are famously harsh about frauds carried out using the mails. Is this also true of the Royal Mail?

You should also be opening a police report in your own location and sending it to the police in the buyer's location.

If you are selling items in this price range, you should be carrying commercial insurance. We use Hugh Wood International of London, New York and Toronto.

They specialize in insuring collectibles both for dealers and for collectors. They are the insurers for the American Philatelic Society.

Because they are specialists they are willing to insure items in transit .and understand that dealer's stocks and collector's collections are always in flux.

On the down side they work with annual policies, not one offs. On the upside their rates are better and they cover more than most household or generalist companies.

We used them when we had a B&M store (and still do for the public auction house where DH is president) and kept them when we retired for DH's stamp collection and our art collection.

Unfortunately ebay disputes are based on the country site the buyer BUYS on.

Now keep the buyers

  • user name
  • name and address
  • sellers sales record number

so if they try to buy again from you under a different user name you can contact eBay and give them the matching info, and let them work on the security issues.

Good Luck Selling!

I'm Canadian.

I haven't had many problem over the 20-odd years we've been selling here, but I've always been dealing with eBayCanada when I do.

However- the rest of my advice dealt with the criminal justice system and with the postal system, nothing to do with eBay.

Re: The scam cost me as a seller 1300 pounds! stolen item from the box.

Did you insure the package with the carrier?

Granted it may be too late for that now, lets keep one thing in mind:

Anytime a buyer contacts a seller, no matter how outrageous, crazy or outlandish the buyer's message may seem...

A cool head and the reaction and emotion that goes into the FIRST reply generally can spell out the whole scenario.

For example...

Had this item been insured...

And the buyer had contacted the seller...

A good first response may have been to contact the carrier to find out about opening a possible insurance claim, mostly for informational purposes at this point, so as to figure out how to proceed.

Informing the buyer of this, and then keeping the buyer in the loop every step of the way...

May have avoided a whole lot of trouble.

Of course we don't know, I don't know, it's just me thinking out loud.

(5117712967) Reason for return Missing parts or pieces Comments Buonasera, ho appena ricevuto il pacco che doveva contenere una bambola antica molto costosa.

Re: The scam cost me as a seller 1300 pounds! stolen item from the box.

@orbleuette That's pretty threatening or at least presumptuous. Who cares about her daddy's nap time?

BTW the mods may remove it for the customer's ID. We are not allowed to "name and shame" other members here.

Is the buyer in Quebec or France?

I'd be showing it to Customer Service.

It doesn't matter in what country. Whichever you can telephone. If eBaydotCOM gave you a complaint number for the Dispute, have that handy for the clerk.

Google translate (I don't speak Italian)

Good evening, I just received the package that was supposed to contain a very expensive antique doll. The box contains only a naked and headless body. I ask you to intervene urgently because I paid € 1500 and I am ready to report the seller if he does not return my money immediately. The box does not seem to have been tampered with but it is very ruined and small to hold the doll I bought. I enclose photos and look confident your quick help
