The old switcharoo

I had a potential buyer message me with many questions about an item. From the drift of her questions, she instinctively sounded like trouble so I plainly told her “it sounds like this item may not be for you based on your concerns”. No sooner did I send her that message than she bought it. Today of course I get a message that she wants to return it because one component of the set was sticky inside. I KNOW this is not true because I packed other components of the set inside of it. I have agreed to the return, even though I say no returns, items as is, and I KNOW I’ll be getting back a different item than the one I sent her. I’m pretty sure she is upgrading a set she already has based on the questions. I know there’s not much else I can do but grin and bear it even though if it what comes back is not what I sold her. What do you all do in this situation? (Of course she is now on my blocked bidder list)

Good ebay customer service should dictate assisting this buyer with advice as to how to appropriately address this  "sticky" issue, & thereby avoid the costs & inconvenience of a

return. 


I think even better customer service dictates letting the buyer keep the item, after sending the buyer about $400 for the inconvenience of the - horrors! - "sticky" issue.

I don't see fraud as just part of the cost.  I see fraud as what it is:  A crime.  Now it is true that we must choose our battles.  But if there is no fear in the eyes of the fraudster, it will only get worse while fraudsters take over internet commerce.

 

That said, the person has not switched anything.  It is possible that the person is just lying to force a return but won't go to the next level and send back a different item.  Don't waste time on imaginary problems.  I say that not to be mean.  It is human nature to do that.  Try to resist.  Wait.  If it really happens, then complain.

Since the basis of her complaint is that I sent her a sticky item (which it was not), I’d assume I’m going to be receiving a sticky item back.  That will mean there’s a substitution.

Not necessarily.  In fact, I seriously doubt she will go to that trouble UNLESS she really does switch it out.  She doesn't have to.  Once you get it back she gets her money.  Whether it really is sticky is immaterial. 

 

Don't worry....yet.  But please tell us how it turns out.

Did you have ebay provide the label through the return case?  Those aren't charged to your seller account until the buyer uses them.

Update: she sent me several messages in a row asking where the label was and that she needed/ wanted my item out of her house ASAP (I thought that was a tad strange). Thanks to the help given here, I was able to say to her “the label has been waiting for you in your case information all along.” That shut her up completely.

 

will update when I get item back. Thanks again to all who have helped out.

Correction to update: she just messaged me again and said she doesn’t see a label in her case and I better figure it out ASAP. I’m sensing that she wants me to give up and say keep it.

Ignore her; she can call ebay if she really wants to return the sticky wicket.

 

Of course she doesn't want to return anything.  A mailing label issue on the buyer's end is always the first clue.

 

I don't remember if you said; hopefully this isn't a large amount of money.

All your sold items appear to be toddler toys.  SMDH-- I thought  all mothers gave used toys a thorough cleaning and sanitizing before they let their child play with them and stick their mouth on them!!!!!    Wouldn't that pre-use cleaning  fix the problem?  Even if used toys appear clean you don't know who drooled on them, wiped boogers on them, etc., or how good a job the seller did cleaning before selling.  Some list it as they find it and don't clean because they know the mother is going to re-clean anyway!   Or they should!      

 

Then you have the collectors who lack a certain piece or have a damaged piece in their set so they buy yours and make up a feeble reason to return it.  

 

I think your buyer might be an unscrupulous collector instead of a mom buying toys.

 

Sooner or later it's bound to happen to everyone.
