I received a letter in the mail today from the IRS claiming I owe thousands in taxes for stuff I sold through eBay.
Anyone else receive a letter like this??
If this is the case I think I am done with eBay… I own thousands in collectibles which I purchased from many retailers and paid taxes upon purchasing. I sold stuff on eBay that I no longer wanted to collect with the money gain I purchased other collectible for my current interests. I think from now on I rather sale through garage sales or on platforms where people meet up and pay cash.

I am on the one hand very sorry that you were unprepared for this, on the other it would appear that you are also really uninformed... The bad news is, you can't just have yard sales and consider that "tax free income" any more than you can sell on eaby as such (although I am sure many will try), I have more bad news...
To purchase from a tax evader is not something I would take lightly...
I may buy from those who hold occasional yard sales, however I can not declare expenses where I get no receipt and it has become increasingly difficult to source inventory without obtaining a receipt as far as the IRS is concerned... No receipt means no expenses, and if I can't purchase something that I can deduct as an expense then you can expect your price to decline dramatically...
In other words the buyer pays our taxes.
The seller just has to raise their prices accordingly.
Eaby facilitates this process greatly.

just make $600 and you have to file smh
02-04-2022 11:04 AM
Wrong. "Just make $600.00 is not correct. Taking in $600.00 in sales will generate a 1099
The $600.0 can be all profit, some profit, No profit, Or a loss, Or a total loss.
$600.00 in sales
Subtract the cost of the goods you sold
Subtract your expenses
What's left over is what you owe taxes on.
A 1099 does not automatically mean you owe taxes. It just means the IRS has you on their radar.
