I recently sold an order to a customer in San Francisco California. Ebay did not collect any tax from them. As far as I know, California loves collecting its taxes. Can anyone think of a reason why no taxes were charged by ebay?

Could be that buyer has filed with Ebay as a tax-exempt entity within the Sate of California.

It's up to eBay to collect and remit taxes. You don't need to go behind them to make sure they're doing their job. As suggested, maybe the buyer has a tax exemption.

Plants may not be taxable in California.

agreed with all the above....good advice and answers...
My one buying account is Tax Exempt when I use it for items for resale.....(you need to register with ebay and provide documentation)
also, some items (clothing, coins, bullion, etc...) are not taxable in some jurisdictions.....
also, as stated...not your responsiblity

@violetsource All good reasons provided by others. I'll throw in another one that happened to one of my sales. I sold something to a repeat buyer and was surprised that no taxed was charged and asked the buyer about it and they replied that their state was having a tax-free day and amazingly eBay knew about it and processed it correctly!

I try not to worry about stuff that isn't my concern or responsibility!

Here is Florida we had a tax free holiday on certain items for hurricane preparation and now have a two week back-to-school tax free holiday on clothing, backpacks, computers under a certain dollar amount. Not sure if eBay is aware of it, but they do usually notify all those that collect Florida sales tax a few weeks in advance.
