Wow, what a sad end to a childhood memory.

But do children even play with toys anymore.

With Toys R Us going out of business, I guess not.

TRUs

They did not go under because no one buys toys anymore they went under because of gross incompetence on the part of the corporate owners. They did the same as so many companies do take huge loans to buy the company and then pay the owners huge amounts of cash each year and then interest payments eat up almost all they make. One of the owners was Bain Capital

TRUs

I didn't read into why they are closing. But I'm actually surprised they didn't close sooner. Growing up, going to TRU on a weekend was a treat. And I didn't always walk out with anything. There were as many TRUs as there were Targets back then. With technology changing and being the primary toy for kids (and adults), it's no wonder the traditional toy store can't keep up.

I was surprised in the late 90's when Kay Bee Toys went out of business. At that time I thought TRU would be soon next. I would think most toys are bought online anyways (good for eBay I guess?).

The sad part is with these toy stores being gone, I feel that a bit of innocence is lost. I wonder how FAO is doing? There's only one near me about 15 miles away.

Too bad they didn't have the foresight to become Phones-R-Us, with, ya know, kid-oriented marketing.

I have great memories too, like going in there and just being... awed  Smiley Sad

It was not if TRU was going to close it was when. I believe the same trio was in on Caldor and Bradlees also. The group that sent Kay-Bee packing also owned Sports Authority (another closed company) and currently owns petco. These groups buy these companies and strip them bare of all value and oops time to file for bankruptcy. It is disgusting what this country has turned into.

That right there is their problem - they didn't think or plan ahead.  When the economy tanked and was slow to recover, they should have realized that a store as big as a football field in high rent districts is going to cost them big time when people are cutting back.

Plus parents don't want to do the work to pack their kid up and lug them around a huge store - nor do they want to let their kids out of their sight while they shop anymore.  The whole kids playing with the toys and then buying them concept is not something parents want their kids exposed to - they fear germs now more than ever.

TRU did this to themselves..

We have one TRU in our area and it is in a strip mall annex to our main mall that is hard to get into, the parking lot is a minefield and the strip mall was never ever full, even when first opened.  They should have moved to a smaller space or building with better access and/or renegotiated their rent.

On top of that, their distribution system was as inconsistant as ebay search results as toys would appear in one store and never make it to others, exclusives never making it to the shelves and their website never putting up notice when they are out of product.

The times have changed, while kids are playing with different things, TRU seemed unaware of it and did nothing to evolve with the times.

They still have 23,000 items on eBay. Maybe they will continue selling on here?

TRU filed for liquidation bankruptcy, there is going to be a lot of their merchandise listed on ebay, but it won't be from them anymore.

I'll bet the line to get into their clearance sales is starting even as I type this.

Their Problem is that they are a Bane Capital   Run owned  company  !  And Bane Capital  bought   K  Bee Toy's  and Quickly  closed them down  and their toys went to TRUs  .     Sadly F.A.L . Shwart's  toy's  closed their  last store 2 years ago.

Just heard on the news that if you have a gift card, it has to be used within 30 days.

Seems they could not find a buyer, so they will be closing down.
