Thanks in advance for any tips or suggestions.
I am a long time Ebay seller, and specialize in high end niche technology products.
I recently fell below standard as a seller, having accured 3 defects from buyers who filed immediate cases over relatively small issues where I simply could not respond fast enough.
Have also accrued a 6.18% late delivery rate, with only 1 seller reported late delivery.
I am attempting to increase the quantity of items I have for sale, and I am generally the lowest priced vendor for any given item, apples to apples.
The issue is that I am really sandboxed by the effects of the below standard rating. Sales immediately dropped from roughly 50-60K/month to roughly 20K/month. I believe that may be because all of my listings show up at or near the bottom of Best Match search for a given item query.
Just curious if anyone has any suggestions. I thought I was gonna get past it by the April evaluation, having listed a ton of stuff below cost just to get more transactions to affect the percentages on my defects, but it does not seem to have had much of an effect.
Thanks
Cory

OP~~Did you cancel the 1st sale of the phone through ebay or did you just refund and relist? If you just refunded the buyer and relisted the phone you may have very well received an "out of stock" defect.

The only way that a seller can get an "Out of stock" defect point is by canceling the transaction and choosing "Out of stock" as the reason. OP has mentoined that his 3 defect points are for "cases closed without seller resolution."

It was my understanding months ago that when a seller just refunded a buyer in full through pay pal ebay considered it an out of stock and gave the seller a defect. When a seller just refunds a buyer and doesn't file a cancellation saying they are out of stock, buyer requested to cancel or seller has a problem with the buyers address or whatever ebay just considers it an out of stock & seller receives a defect. When did that change?

After my velcro shut down it was aweful...recovery is slow as a snail...I'm still not recovered...so I think you hit it right on the head...it will be hard to regain your standard...

<<I have given out $600 in "good faith" partial refunds this week to buyers who received items that I feel were very accurately described, but buyers hit me up for credit because of subjective issues, or just because they know they can (more likely the latter).>>
Why?Why?Why?
I'm sure that you think you are doing the right thing ... and everybody runs their business the way they want ... but ...
IMO, you (and others that cave in to partials) are part of the problem.
Your buyers will now EXPECT that, when they whine, the next seller should give them a post-sale discount ...
If you are giving that many partials, check your descriptions ... are you accurately describing the real condition of the item? Or are you just saying "good"?
If you are pointing out all of the flaws, there is no such thing as subjectivity ... it either is or isn't As Described.
If it's NAD "return for refund" or just refund in full (if you don't want to pay return shipping).
But please, for the sake of the rest of us, stop enabling.

Keith, You wouldn't "see any negatives" on his account unless he was talking about feedback, which he isn't -- he has perfect feedback. He's talking about defects and only he can see them ( they're on his seller's dashboard). @keithharrierenterprises

Everyone has their opinion of selling on any site. There are MANY small sellers here who are doing just fine. I don't think you will have many (if any) followers who will heed your advice and leave eBay. I have found that those who say they are leaving are still here listing and selling weeks later~~if they are able to.
I'm a small seller and I've been here selling for over 17 years now. eBay has never limited my account or put any restrictions on my account in all these years. I have never had any problems that lead me to believe eBay is attempting to get rid of me because I am a small seller. As for most of the "big box" sellers~~I would rather just go to the store and buy retail.
I just got an e mail from eBay last week congratulating me on being in the top 10% of sellers selling in the "home & garden" category the previous week. That doesn't lead me to believe they are trying to push me out of being a seller on eBay.
If you run into problems you need to figure out what you did wrong and do something so that you don't make the same mistake again. 2 years ago I got a defect for fighting a return. My defect fell off last April and I will NEVER make that mistake again. At the time I got it I called ebay and they told me if I didn't want to have to accept buyer remorse returns to change to a no returns policy. I did that and it's save me MANY times since. If I get a remorse return request it's right there that I have the choice to refuse it. I click on refuse and that's the end of it. I have to be smart enough to know not to fight a legit return request.
As for late shipping~~do as everyone else does who has had that problem in your post office not scanning~~create a scan sheet & have your clerk scan it & your problem is solved. I ship over the counter myself so by the time I get home from the post office my tracking already shows that it's been accepted at my post office. I'm at 100% on shipping time and I have -0- defects. I aim to keep it that way.

I was a above performance seller , had the little emblem there.
Now I'm "below Standard"
I had won a few disputes and thought the dispute process worked and was fair, but found out it depends on the people deciding the outcome, the last one thats killing my rating was a Hard to find circuit board that i listed as "not working, sold as is" "no retunrs" the buyer asked to return it I said
no and let ebay decide the case. I lost and that lost case has cost me thousands so far.
4% of 40k = 2k
Plus eBay says they hide your products from the search. Its true I can price an item lower than others and it will not show in in any search by part# or description.
I now offer returns and would not chance a dispute again because its simply not worth it.
One dispute that I won through ebay, I lost on the second round dispute through paypal when the buyer disputed it with his credit card company. All they have to do is: Pay with a credit card and then file a defective item claim. They don't have to return the item. Paypal can not fight the CC peeps.
The 1k I lost on that one hurt , the buyer says "he is the victim" but I think he did it intentionally and knew how to work the system . All you can do is move on and try to still be profitable in the next round.
My two cents
