Strangest thing you've found while sourcing

I saw for sale yesterday at a thrift shop an empty pickle jar (complete with lid, and label still attached) for $1.

Seemed a little pricey.  😂

A sign of the times, perhaps?

My sourcing is different than most. My husband & I own a salvage business. We pay salvage fees for structures that are deemed for demolition and before the demo crew shows up, we get a little time to salvage anything we can unless it's specifically off limits in the contract. Been doing it over 30 years. We mostly salvage building materials, but you'd be amazed at what some people leave behind and not so surprised at other stuff they leave.

Last year my husband was cleaning out a building on our lot and ran across a bucket of medical tools/equipment used for gynecological exams.

They obviously can't be listed because they're literal medical devices.

My granddaughter wanted to list them on Facebook Marketplace for Halloween or a haunted house. My daughter was horrified at the thought of a twisted serial killer getting his hands on them if we did.

They're still in the bucket. I guess I should tell my husband to just scrap them the next time he does a scrap run.

@fbusoni

Being in denim sales, I’ve found just about anything and everything people can stick in their pockets and really not surprised by much of it anymore but what I do find strange is how someone doesn’t check their pockets before donating their jeans?! Cash is found (almost weekly) and goes straight into the “margarita” night out fund 😋

Now how about strange requests? Seller from UK messages me earlier today asking if I will send them a photo of me wearing these really tiny short shorts “they” were interested in buying. Yeah, that’s a hard “OH NO I WON’T” be doing that. 🤣

You got that request because your assets are so kickin' apparently.  😁

@kickin.assets

That's a good story (about the pockets of jeans).

For some reason it reminded me of a story I saw on the news not long ago about a guy who would situate himself outside the front door of a given jewelry shop on a busy NY city street.  He had a bucket of water and a dental pick, and would meticulously explore the cracks in the sidewalk out front.

Apparently he has been able to amass a small fortune -- diamonds,  pieces of gold and silver jewelry, etc..

As for strange requests... that one you mention sounds to me less strange than par for the course these days.   Anonymity gives some people the license they crave to be obnoxious.  I hope you blocked him.

Yes... I hear you loud and clear.

I think that those of our generation carry all sorts of psychological scars.

I was fortunate to have been sent (by virtue of a change in my father's work situation) to boarding school in the UK when I was 15... never to return home to live full time with my family.   It was probably one of the best things that happened to me.

Now some may ask: how does this relate to selling on eBay?  😁

Well, I learned at a very, very young age how to survive and be self-sufficient.  And those skills serve me quite well today.

@fbusoni

That’s a great story! Who knew, nor would ever have thought, that sitting outside a jewelry store with a bucket and pick would even be worth the time/effort, but apparently, he did well!

Strange has been the “theme” these last couple weeks! 🤣 I’m used to people asking about the fit of an item, which in a heartbeat, I will help them with … but a grown man, asking me through eBay, to model some short shorts for him?!? You’re correct, obnoxious!

Yes, he was definitely added to my BBL.

Re: Strangest thing you've found while sourcing

At the beginning of every month and the end of every month...corners and sidewalks on the blocks become a 'thrift shop' in Pacific Heights in San Francisco where I live.

People move out and leave things all the time.

We have no alleys so items are just outside waiting for someone to pick them up.

I picked up two floor fans, plants, cycle bike, toys, children chairs and the list is endless.

The rich people throw away good items always in our neighborhood.

I usually have a TON of designer shoes listed.. The tall five inch stiletto type, anyway..

Every so often I get a message asking me to take model pics and send them..

Some even suggest I wear frilly socks etc..

Nope... Not happening.

I resemble this....

My mom was severely bipolar, my entire life.

I was actually more the parent.

It was rough growing up, REALLY rough..  I lived with other family members often, spent 3 yrs with my aunt & uncle.

But as an adult, I forgave her. When her husband passed she moved in with my husband & I. She lived with us almost 10 years & passed away 4 years ago.. It felt like losing a child. I still miss her..

It was rotten but it also made me who I am today. Strong, independent, compassionate, empathetic and forgiving.

Also easily guilted  but hey, we can't have the good without the bad right..

Mine doesn't relate to eBay lol but IDC.

Requests like these, though, are nothing new - I remember them when I was selling in the late 90s. I just roll my eyes. The foot fetish people are always polite (at least in my experience). Actually, I've never had a rude encounter with requests like this. I just say "No, I don't do that, actually" and they thank me and go away.

ETA: My life got less horrible when my mother died, but was still pretty bad, so I ended up not really being socialised. I just worked all the time and raced bikes so I didn't have to socialise save when I wanted to (usually during bike training). Life was like a foreign movie with no subtitles - I NEVER knew what was going on, except at work and when training. I have a pretty good grasp on things now. Usually.

LOL! Not happening! I second that!!

Guess it just took me by surprise, because the first thing I did was laugh, then thought, this is eBay, not OF, right?!

As @fbusoni mentioned, I hope you blocked those who request such things.

BTW … I love stilettos second to my cowboy boots … But I promise, I’ll never ask you for photos of you wearing them 🤣

I  used to do salvage in a small way - I found it tough but rewarding. All of that is sewn up around here, now - professional outfits moved in and the stuff is all contracted out. I was just a little table-topper.
