I have been a Ebay member buyer/seller since 1999 untill recently my account was frozen because I refuse to give up my SSN. No one should have to give up there SSN.the reason is that you will be reported to the IRS so that you will have to pay more taxes because its earn income.most of us who rely on making a few dollars are tax those of us who are retire and living on fix social security income depend on flea markets and garage sales for extra cash it's going to get to a point if you stop to use a restroom you will be tax it's out of control . I will close my account with Ebay and sell where I'm not under pressure to keep them happy the more you sale on Ebay the better they look there employees get pay and there stocks go up.

Nope, when I signed up with PP in 2007, I was never asked for my SS #. We had to provide: Full name, phone number, which they called to verify, your address, a checking account number & routing number which PP adds some change in your account and once you see it in your account you reply to the email and relay the amount they added to your account and you're done. But NEVER have I EVER had to give my SS#. Not with PP or Amazon.

You are conflating income tax and sales tax, which are two entirely different things.
And sales tax on an item doesn't end with its first sale, either. It's not a tax on the item. It's a transaction tax. (I know you know this, but it's amazing how many evidently do not.)

Bro, publicly admitting you're a tax evader it's probably not the smartest thing to do...

I am done selling here as an occasional small time individual seller. You all can pay your taxes, and your fees on final value and shipping costs, to boot. Adios. BTW if they run every mom and pop off and become a commercial venue only, that will also reduce my buys for sure.

You are absolutely correct. In 2007 you did not have any reason to provide PP with your SSN nor did they ask for it. However in 2011 IRS created the 1099K and the rules and regs that went with that required Money Processors to have seller's SSNs. PP then started notifying their sellers in 2011/2012 that they had to update their accounts to include SSNs or EINs to continue to use PP as their money processor for selling on the internet. It was required for all sellers.

Interesting. You reap the benefits of those that are willing to pay their taxes. Ebay provides a service, so why would they not have the right to be paid for that? If you are only looking for things that are free, you are quite right, that isn't selling on this site or similar.
Chances are that you don't sell enough to even have additional income taxes. You'd still need to claim them on your taxes, but likely it would have no impact to what you owe. So it appears you are upset for a reason that wouldn't negatively affect you in the first place.

I went to the bank to open a checking account.
SOB's want my SSN.
Screw them, i'm going elsewhere.

I happen to agree with you.
they have my date of birth my bank account/routing numbers....
which if I make enough money here will be taxed when I do my taxes....
why do they need my SS#?
I was very uncomfortable parting with this information and it has nothing to do with not paying taxes.

If you read some of the many threads on this subject you would see. It isn't something they are doing because they want to or can. It is because IRS REQUIRES them to. Just like it did for PP.

I dont have a problem per se reporting my SSN to ebay for tax purposes EXCEPT the only security message I saw says it will kept in a "secure manner" . What level of encryption will be used ? Where is the server ? Is it an ebay server or a rental ? What ISO or otherwise certified auditor audits ebay's security protocols and hardware measures taken to secure my SSN information ? The only other promise ebay makes is that it wont share it with buyers . That ain't much .
Furthermore I have seen junk cars and other items sell at auction for 1000 to 10,000 times their value - smells like money laundering ? ebay not complicit but the real reason to provide an SSN is to thwart money laundering via US entities . A good cause for sure . When I see a reasonable set of security practices then I would be more inclined to share my SSN .

Keep in mind if Ebay were to supply all that information to you, it would likely make our information less secure. They can't publicly share much info about what or how they encrypt things. There are things that must remain private, secure info, no matter how much you may want it.
