Sketchy eBay and Sketchy Mixed Messages

I've had it with eBay AND PayPay for a number of reasons...and if you do business with either of them there's not a need for me to elaborate as to why. I cancelled my eBay store and I REFUSE you utilize PayPal for anything on the internet. (If that's the only payment option a merchant accepts...they'll just have to do without my business. I can sure as hell do without their product.  I've found as a part-time occasional seller that more money can be made on other various online selling platforms - of something sells on eBay, so be it and the 10-12% eBay takes between the listing fee, the final value fee, and the promoted listing fee.  eBay's poor below-par customer service and their giant flea market can go suck one....but getting back to it, that's what this post was about.

After closing shop here a couple years ago I came back and learned that eBay no longer has a dedicated telephone customer service center. Whatever their excuse is.....COVID or a sick aunt....I don't care.  Because of this, If I have an issue I don't have any qualms whatsoever calling eBay out on a public social media platform such as Twitter and asking for assistance there while airing my grievance.  Not everyone uses Twitter, which is a reason I'm inquiring here as well.

When I awoke this morning the eBay app prompted me to call them at 1-866-303-3229 because some f'ing dumb s*** signed into my acct. while I was asleep. I was also given a long numeric number to mention when calling. When I called, not surprisingly, a Phillippino answered with a rooster crowing in the background. When asked about how long eBay has utilized this 24/7 Customer Service telephone number...he couldn't give me an answer - prompting me to end the call.

With all of eBay's **bleep** and webpages dedicated to their bulls*** 'concern' for their customers' acct. security, eBay doesn't seem all that concerned or motivated to answer the question **bleep**?? Either eBay does have a 24/7 telephone number or they do not. There is no gd grey area.

Would anyone please care to share what little knowledge they have on the subject? I certainly would appreciate it and the other eBay sellers certainly have a right to, and I'm sure would appreciate being made crystal clear on this matter.

Thank you for your time...hope you don't waste too much more of it here.

Respectfully,

Speakezee

No crystal clarity from me, because I'm only guessing at what you're actually asking.  If it's why eBay has such wonky customer service, it's because, like a lot of large corporations, CS is viewed as overhead and easily outsourced.  Given that this is a direct point of contact between customers and corporate, it's a short sighted move but seems to be pretty common.  I've had good luck the few times I've called CS, but that was before Covid.  I've been stuck using eBay on Fakebook and Twitter, also, for one or two urgent questions.

The general trend in CS is moving away from phone-based support for multiple reasons. One, text-based support gives a physical record of the conversation that occurred. Two, it's more accessible for people with hearing/speech issues. Three, it doesn't require the person calling to sit around on hold on the phone for however long.

If you try to contact CS on any website these days, they will try to get you to use either email or live chat first. I can't even remember the last time I had a CS exchange on any site that involved the phone, even before COVID.

Yes, this has been a trend for a while and I much prefer it, but in many cases even this is outsourced to not always well-trained personnel because it's still considered overhead.  It's still a direct point of contact and short sighted not to provide consistent CS just to save a few bucks.

Unfortunately, this is something that I'm intimate with from my own work experience.

Re: Sketchy eBay and Sketchy Mixed Messages

OMG, I recently contacted eBay for a feedback issue and I also heard the rooster crowing in the background. I was so shocked, I just HAD to ask, "do you have chickens"? She replied "yes". I can't say enough how embarrassing it was contacting a representative from a MULTI BILLION DOLLAR company and trying to express my concerns when a rooster kept interrupting the conversation. I was very reluctant to say much more regarding my account and lost my confidence contacting via phone. I've heard many reasons, excuses and crazy things from reps. while conversing on the phone but this really had me shaking my head!! Next time, I think the chicken will answer. Perhaps I'll get a better outcome!

Re: Sketchy eBay and Sketchy Mixed Messages

I just went through the same thing. I came home and tried to log on to Ebay and my sign in info was changed. I also got the 866-303-3229 number with the long verification code that they were supposed to ask for. Mine had someone from India sitting on a sidewalk in the middle of the night with traffic and car horns. She wanted my name, email and cell number....LOL...fat chance I'm giving that. I asked her about the long code number and she didn't seem interested in that. Sooooo, I immediately hung up and went to my banking app and transferred all funds from the linked Ebay account. I got hacked in April,, and it's been down hill ever since, all my email accounts are compromised, passwords changing, getting locked out. These asshat scammers need their hind-ends kicked.
