Should I dropship or buy the product myself and then resale it?

I've been a seller on ebay for a few years and have great reviews. In the past, i've only sold a few things a year. I got into dropshipping with shopify and for the most most part I did good, but I got one bad review and stopped dropshipping on ebay with shopify b/c I was afraid ebay would ban me. Well Now i'm looking to do something different. I want to do print on demand; however, I'm hesitant about the delivery and quality since it would be dropshipping. On the other hand, I could just purchase the products I design and have them sent to me and then sell them one ebay from there. I would have the buyer pay shipping. I was thinking about using printful, printify or gooten.  These companies allow you to buy your own designs at a discount.Should I just buy the product myself to play it safe or dropship anyway? By the way, i'm thinking of starting small before purchasing a lot of products.

Buying the products yourself and reselling them is the best way to go. I haven't heard anything positive about drop shipping. You have 7 items listed, that's a good start. Good luck.

If you can drop ship, it will really help cut down on your overhead and waste.

What you could do is order preliminary pieces from your vendors to ensure the quality of the product meets your needs. Once you have everything set up. Sell your on hand inventory and the drop ship the balance of your custom designed product. Each new product you introduce, treat in the same way - quality control, revisions as needed, then once finalized, sell on hand, then drop ship future orders from the selected vendor.

One of the biggest issues any retailer faces is the carrying cost of inventory. That is why drop shipping is so attractive to so many. It simply does not tie up loads of capital.

Good luck selling!

Cheers

Buy the product and ship it from your location that is always the safest I have always done that with my old letters and documents. To many things can go wrong with drop shipping. Reselling is better.

Well that's an easy one. Buy it yourself and resell it. I would never drop ship. And I don't like getting drop shipped on!

Here's the REAL question:

How much do you know and trust your supplier?

Lots of folks do very well with the dropshipping method, both here on eBay and ESPECIALLY in the larger business world. There are probably hundreds of thousands of businesses in the US alone, both large and small, that exclusively dropship. Pretty much all of them who are successful in the long term have reliable, trusted suppliers.

I'd consider building a new business based on dropshipping from a relatively unknown supplier to be a HUGE risk, but I've built businesses based on established relationships with trusted suppliers more than once with great success.

REALLY KNOW your supplier before jumping in, IMHO. It's just too easy for the unscrupulous supplier to "slip" and expose themselves to your buyers, in an underhanded attempt to steal business. Seen it happen too many times before...

Or even worse, they could "slip" in their quality of product manufacturing or timely shipping - either way, it's YOUR reputation at risk and outside your control.

So you might want to consider skipping on the dropshipping and do as most others here are suggesting.

Consider the big picture for YOUR business.

Like a little flyer with cheaper prices than yours. A discount to shop with them, not you.

Get your inventory on your own. Once you own you can do anything you want with it.

While Ebay allows drop shipping, it is under very specific rules, and they frown upon and are eliminating some who do so.

There are issues inherent with dropshipping that can cause the problems you mention.  You don't know what they shipped, if anything.

So you might want to buy product and then resell it.

Drop-shipping adds another layer of risk for the seller. Some find this acceptable. I prefer to have the items in my possession so as not to rely on an outside party to store, pack, and ship. Ebay’s seller metrics include rating the timeliness of shipping. So it is critical to meet or exceed that expectation regularly. Good luck with whatever you decide.

I do both buying product and some dropshipping it works out well for me. I use a vendor that I trust and I update my inventory every other day.  It's close by so I'm able to see the merchandise as well. Buy a small amount to test and see how long it takes for it to ship and if they give updates on inventory etc.

As long as you have an agreement with your supplier to act as a drop shipper for you, you will be adhering to that portion of the Ebay rules.

If this is something you are seriously thinking about, vet your suppliers completely.  You need to know their handling times as well as the quality of the products that you will be purchasing from them.  You need to understand the products so you can accurately describe them.

Some people that have never done drop shipping do not think it can be done successfully.  Others have been on the receiving end and been burnt by a seller that drop ships and then goes OOS and therefore doesn't ship the order.

If done properly, drop shipping is NOT an easy job as a seller.  It is hard work, dedication and commitment to make sure the inventory you are presenting as being available for sale on this site is both well described, but actually available to be sold.

Some things I sell I drop ship.  I've used my Vendor for many years.  I get a report 5-7 times a week that give me inventory exceptions.  New things to stock, price increases, price decreases, back in stock and items that are now OOS.  I review this report daily and make any adjustment to my listings that are necessary.

The thing that will damage you quickly is if you sell stuff you can't ship.  So make sure you have some procedure that works for you in place that will allow you to keep your active listings as accurate as possible.  That is your responsibility as a seller and to your customers.  If you get too many dings for OOS, you will significantly damage the health of your selling account.

If you have questions, feel free to ask.

If I suspect a seller is drop shipping an item I'm interested in I have my wife look at the site she uses. Low and behold it is usually cheaper there. We needed a coffee pot one time. Found the one we wanted and the drop shipper was OOS. They canceled the order without our request and so we waited longer for a coffee pot. It disappeared from our purchase history so we couldn't warn others about this bad service. We photograph, describe and list our items. We send you what you buy from us. And we do it as soon as we can. In other words, if drop shipping is suspected by us Ebay looses the sale here.

That can absolutely work, but it may not as well.

Because someone drop ships their products is in now way a guarantee that they are the lowest price for the product.  Nor do sellers, at least that I'm aware of, state such a guarantee.  It certainly may or may not be true and it could pertain to any seller selling any item on Ebay.  They may or may not be the lowest price.  But then that is one of the buyer's responsibilities to check and determine if the item is worth their time or money.  Not a determination for the seller to make.

Some things you are just better off getting from a drop shipper.  Things where freshness is important is one reason.  Things that either have an expiration date or if stored improperly can have their life span significantly affected.

Just some thoughts to consider.  Drop shipping are not dirty words if the seller is serious about doing it the right way.  There are lots of sellers that do it WRONG.  But there are lots of sellers that do it the right way too.  But as a buyer I completely respect your concerns and observations.
