Buyer purchased item on Saturday, 10/17. On Sunday I sent them a message that if they pay now, I can ship the item out on Monday morning. They messaged me back the next day saying they couldn't pay for the item now because their out-of-state grandchild is in the hospital, and 'sorry for the inconvenience.'
Right now I have an angel on one shoulder saying "but it's their grandchild!" and a little devil on the other saying " well, if they can type out a message, they can hit the payment button".
So all y'all out there with much more experience than my 7 months, would you put in an resolution form, or give them a little more time - like . . .Monday? No? Yes?

This is Thursday..do you mean this coming Monday?

Yes

I never send messages to unpaid buyers, I just set the automatic unpaid item assistant to 4 days, which gives them 8 days to pay. But from experience, if they don't pay in the first 48 hours they usually never do.
But since you did, did they give you a day of when they can pay? If so, wait until then to open the case. Then after the case closes, block the buyer.

If you want your fees back Non paying bidder.
As for if true or not: well excuses are and do happen. Maybe its true: more likely not.

No date of when they were going to pay was given, just a 'sorry for the inconvenience.'

I'd give them a week. Maybe they're like me and won't pay unless they're on their own wifi

Unless you offered a specific day in the near future before which they should pay, just file the unpaid item dispute now. The fact that you have already had an exchange of messages with them, and they cannot even float a possible payment date, suggests that they are hoping that this whole thing will go away. Once you file the unpaid item dispute, it will indeed go away, when four more days will pass, and you then close the dispute and thus close the case.

Since you offered up some kind consideration by reaching out, I would give them a bit, then if no payment....
You were the one that opened this can of worms by starting the conversation with options. As a seller, I would not of contacted them until day 4 of original purchase date.
I hope it all works out for you and, most importantly, their grandchild.
With kindness,
Grandma

truly don't see where I opened a can of anything by sending them an invoice and a reminder but whatever.

I would try to force them to ask for a cancellation............
Dear buyer........I'm not sure I understood your message.......do you want me to cancel the transaction?........
nothing more.......just get try to get it off your plate.........if they don't answer, file the UPI.........

.... 'sorry for the inconvenience' = no money forthcoming.
File UPI, and continue on with life.

Tagging on. I'd bet a Subway 12" that's not the first time they were an NPB.
Ebay would be better off without these sport bidders interrupting the flow of whatever it is we're doing.

if they don't pay by the time the unpaid item assistant kicks in, i add them to my BBL and move on... messaging someone about lack of payment almost never ends well...

Clearly, by suggesting payment so that you can ship on Monday. An invoice is not the same, this is opening up a dialog, but **whatever.
Not all people are deceptive.
I prefer to give everyone the benefit of the doubt, and yes, I believe that you opened a can of worms. They did not reach out to you, but you reached out to them.
Just me.
