I was shown how to ship without tracking because the item was so small by eBay customer service and was told I would not be penalized. Ebay directed me to use the drop-down menu in my order dashboard and state it was shipped, which I did. They said by doing that that eBay would trigger a request to the buyer to let them know if the item was received. Even after the buyer stated that they received the item, eBay gave me a defect. This has happened to me twice with no recourse to have the defect reversed.

You need to check your defects. Ebay does not give defects for no tracking. You must have misunderstood what they said. The also have no way whatsoever to contact a buyer to tell them their item was received.

How did the buyers 'state' that the delivery was on time? I don't think it can be in a message. I think it has to be through an option in the system. (Not sure, haven't really seen this option).

Ebay does indeed give defects for not providing tracking and not providing tracking for some small $3.99 items that I mail in a regular old #10 envelope is the only reason I do not have TRS status. It sends me to "above standard" but will not send me to "below standard".

Correct for those worrying about TRS status. The OP is not concerned with that that I know of, at least they never mentioned it. I was referring to DEFECTS. As long as you mark the item shipped there is no defect for not providing tracking.

Specifically, for TRS----"Tracking uploaded within your stated handling time, and carrier validation for 95% of transactions to US buyers." But as others have said-no defects given for no tracking.

There are NO defects for not using tracking. It can keep you out of TRS, but it will not, by itself, drop you down further than Above Average.

A lot of sellers, myself included, use a #10 envelope with a stamp or two, or a larger flexible envelope to send out items that are small, thin and flexible to qualify for the much lower non-tracked USPS rates. Examples of this are small items such as collector stamps, needlecraft patterns, non-advertising pamphlets, and other thin & flexible items that fit within the USPS parameters.

If you're actually receiving a defect, it isn't because of not using tracking... UNLESS you are not marking the item as shipped in your Seller Hub Orders tab.

Hi, 1st time, I did receive a defect downgrade from 100% to 97% for not having tracking, even though I marked it shipped in my order tab and the buyer gave me a very positive feedback. This time did this only 1 day after I shipped item & I shipped it within 1 day of the order. After eBay told me I could send it without tracking, that they would request the buyer let eBay know when they receive it, so I wouldn't get a defect. Couldn't mail it on Monday, President's Day, so I mailed it Tuesday at the Post office.

Dropping from 100% to 97% is not exactly a "Defect" It's a score keeping system to be used

to keep you qualified for TRS status if that matters to you.

I ship stamps all the time with a forever stamp and #10 white envelope. Not a day

goes by that I don't send out at least one cheap order in that manner.

I keep my TRS status by not letting that % drop below 95%

Lose TRS if you drop below 95% a penatly, But I wouldn't call it a defect.

I've never heard in 23 years selling on ebay without using tracking, Of ebay contacting

a buyer or asking the buyer to contact ebay for delivery updates.

Simply have never heard of such a thing.

Your CRS rep was either wrong or you heard them wrong.

That's what I thought, so I called again last Monday & they verified I could send without tracking. Even though, why do they give you a defect when the buyer gives a great feedback after receiving the item? Why can't you send something without tracking, when it weighs less than an ounce. 59 cent stamp as opposed to $4.35 for tracking?

It's done all the time (ship without tracking) and does not 'affect' a seller as long as they mark the item 'shipped'. Although they cannot obtain Top Rated Status- which means they can't get the 10% off fees (if TRS Plus) and cannot deduct the 'up to 50% on returns (if they offer returns).

It is usually done by sellers selling small dollar items that can fit in a .60c stamped envelope.

A real 'affect' is in your pocket. No 'extra' costs (you cannot become 'below standard' which has a 6% additional FVF).

Here is the definition of ebay's "defect" and tracking is not listed. You are confusing performance evaluation with defects.

A defect is a part of a transaction that eBay considers to have created a bad shopping experience for buyers. A transaction can get a defect in two ways.

When a seller cancels a transaction for out of stock
If a seller is unable to resolve a problem through the Resolution Center and eBay steps in, and the seller is found responsible

A seller’s transaction defect rate is the percentage of their total transactions that had either defect. Note that these defects often measure how satisfied your buyers were with a transaction. We don’t count more than one defect per transaction.

Just this week I received an order from a seller who did not upload the tracking. When I went to leave feedback there was a question there asking me if I had received my item on time. I checked "yes".

Thank you for responding. That is what eBay said was supposed to happen, but they did not even give the item time to get to the buyer. I mailed it Tuesday afternoon & I received a defect for not received by Thursday morning!
