Shipping a Disney Blu/Ray DVD combo and Media Mail

I have been trying to research Media Mail recently. I have come across a lot of conflicting answers and I don't feel like I've found the answer to my question.

If you do a quick google search for what qualifies for Media Mail shipping rates you get a list that looks like:

  • Books (at least 8 pages).
  • Sound recordings and video recordings, such as CDs and DVDs.
  • Play scripts and manuscripts for books, periodicals, and music.
  • Printed music.
  • Computer-readable media containing prerecorded information and guides or scripts prepared solely for use with such media.
  • Sixteen millimeter or narrower width films.
  • Printed objective test materials and their accessories.
  • Printed educational reference chart.
  • Loose-leaf pages and their binders consisting of medical information for distribution to doctors, hospitals, medical schools, and medical students.

I'm not sure what qualifies as an eligbile DVD or recording because I have also read other posts including ones from this forum that give conflicting reports on what exactly will qualify as an eligible DVD. I also haven't found much information specifically regarding Blu-Ray and Media Mail.

Do Blu-Ray discs qualify as eligible "Media"?

Some conflicting things I can't confirm that I've read about Media Mail and what qualifies:

The media, specifically sound and video recording, must possess a copyright as well as a liscense to use the product.

The item(s) being shipped must be in bulk and you cannot ship one item with Media Mail.

Advertising can't be sent via Media Mail.

Only educational material qualifies as Media Mail.

Essentially my questions are can I use Media Mail to ship one factory sealed Disney Blu/Ray DVD combo and does it contain advertising?

yes, same as cd and DVD, strange USPS has not updated the wording and include blu-ray.

Check against first class as that many times is cheaper when sending 1 cd or DVD or blu-ray.

Thanks for letting me know that Blu-Rays are eligbile media. Do you have any idea if Media Mail only qualifies for the discs themselves or is the casing for the cd also included as eligible media?

Can you sell a DVD or Blu-Ray movie new in box via media mail?

Yes, but First Class is smarter.

YES. A blu-ray is the same as a DVD. In fact it is a DVD, just better quality.

Adding on to Sam`s post.......

If you are shipping a single dvd or blu-ray, First Class costs the same or just a slight bit more but mich faster delivery.

If you are shipping multiple discs or box sets Media Mail (anything over about 10oz) is the best although a bit slower option.

I always chuckle when I see someone using Media Mail for something that weighs 5 or 6 ounces.

I was told at my PO that piano rolls are allowed to be shipped Media Mail...

I wonder if they are mistaken?

Hello.  Is Media Mail riskier? Maybe I should update my listings.

It can contain advertising that’s incidental to the movie. You can ship by MM

Media Mail isn't "riskier", it's just way slower for anything that can go FCP instead.

No it isn't riskier than First Class mail. It's a bit slower, but I have used Media Mail for years shipping DVDs and books with no problems. With the rate increase in first class mail, I am finding it cheaper as well.

Maybe.

More time in transit for Media Mail = more chance of damage in transit, especially if it's a CD or DVD in a bubble mailer. If you're going to use MM, ship in a box.
