Shipped and missing?

I sold an item and shipped it through the post office and it never arrived to the destination, has this happened to anyone, opened an investigation on the local post office with nothing so now not only do I lose the item but the money as well. Although I have a theory, I had ordered an item months ago and it was delivered but on the ebay app it says it's still on its way and there's an option to say that the item has not been delivered. Maybe the item I sent was delivered and the seller said it wasnt delivered. What do you guys think?

That's what insurance is for.........if it was mailed priority.....you automatically had $50 insurance and should have put in a claim with USPS.........

Presumably, it or whatever the other thing you are talking about, had tracking......and you should check the USPS site to find out whether it was delivered or not.......  The tracking information is the final "say" on whether something is delivered or not.  A buyer can say it wasn't delivered, but if tracking shows it was, the seller is not responsible (and doesn't have to refund).

Tracking say not delivered: Item not received is what I think.

eBay will see it that way. refund them if they open a case.

the true tracking updates are on the USPS website and that is what ebay will go by

ebay's tracking lags behind the USPS website tracking

you can open a 'where's my package' case from the USPS website if the pkg still has not been delivered or does not have updated tracking info

I think we need more specifics here. What does the tracking history for your package tracking number show on USPS.com right now? What day did you ship the package? What day was the last scan of the package, and what did it say? The USPS does not take a lost mail claim until 21 days from the date of the last scan.

This does happen on occasion that an item is delivered but not scanned as such. And if the (I think you mean)  buyer says they didn't get it, you'll lose the case.

Although most buyers are honest, there are some buyers who do look for negligence and pounce to take advantage.

If you haven't heard from the buyer saying they didn't get it, don't ask. You can be sure that if it doesn't get there, you'll hear from the buyer. No news might just mean it wasn't scanned on delivery.

Yes, it has happened to many people. I found one statistic that said the USPS lost around 80 million packages in 2016.

Correct. You are the one who hired the USPS to deliver your packages on your behalf, so you are responsible for that choice.

I have no doubt that there are buyers who check delivery confirmation and take advantage when it is not there.

That was 5 yrs ago, can you imagine the number of packages they've lost this year and last!! 80 million packages don't just disappear, that's an enormous mountain of packages and the equivalent of 25% of the US population, which would be like 1 in every 4 people not receiving a package!! With their supposed GPS technology, they have to know what's happening to all these packages. SO crazy!!!

Must be nice to be able to stay in business with no accountability. Take a customers payment, fail to provide the service and be able to keep the money with no repercussions! Sellers continue to pay for the USPS failures, while the USPS gets to raise rates annually.

Ignore what the eBay app says what does USPS tracking show. The eBay information is often out of sync with the real USPS status. Not sure why eBay things it still owns part of the shipping process but it has been a problem for a long time.

As for the item you shipped it depends on what class of postage you shipped with. You can open a missing mail claim based on the following USPS timelines. If USPS is unable to locate the package then you can open a reimbursement claim with USPS provided the postage class you used either had insurance as part of the shipping or you purchased insurance when you purchased the label. First class mail for example does not come with insurance like priority mail does but you can purchase it when you crate and buy the label.

I suspect the number is based on Item Not Delivered claims (using an eBay term for a USPS problem) and includes late deliveries.

Certainly any seller who ships with tracking has seen a parcel get delivered a few days (or hours or weeks) after the buyer has been refunded.  And properly, I'm not talking about any actual fraud here.

It's not as if they are all in one pile somewhere. There are two in Twobit AK and 500 spread around every post office in Detroit, and half a dozen behind the water cooler in Penebscot NJ.

This may be a good time to remind ourselves of what a postal terminal actually looks like.

You wrote that precisely two hours after the OP, and you're already throwing in the towel? C'mon now, not everyone is waiting breathlessly for answers to their questions... some people won't check in again until the next day, or later...

The United States of America, where you have to pay insurance to a company to ensure that they do the job you paid them to do originally.

Shipped and missing?

I had a couple of really late deliveries this year. One took a month to reach a buyer 200 miles northeast of me after the buyer asked for and got a refund. However, he was awesome and paid again without prompting.

The other got delivered Sunday 200 miles southeast of me after sitting in one hub for three weeks. I never heard from the buyer.

I let the buyers contact me since sometimes items are not scanned on delivery….rare but it happens. But in each case I did file missing mail requests with USPS. If I had not, I’m sure nothing would have been done by the postal service, or at least not as quickly.

Be responsive to your buyer but let them contact you first. That doesn’t mean you can’t take some action like I did. Fingers crossed this works out as well for you as it did for me!
