Why does eBay have ShipCover as the default insurance when most people are using the free USPS insurance?
I wish they would switch the 2 around and make USPS the default
Does anyone here use ShipCover?

Why would eBay make USPS the default insurance?
I have no need to use USPS when I shjp anything over 1.5 pounds. The shipping charge becomes too costly. FedEx Smart Post until about 10 pounds of weight, then FedEx Home Delivery.
For example: A package weighing 12 pounds for a 16 X 16 X 9 Box is about $14.00 more via USPS for the postage alone for 7-8 day delivery.
USPS is simply not competitive

95% of what I ship I ship USPS.
75% are Flat Rate Priority and the other 20% are 1st class.
In all the years of selling on eBay I have NEVER used ShipCover insurance, NOT EVEN ONCE!

I don't use ShipCover because they don't cover the items I sell.
SO, if I want insurance I have to make a trip to the PO.
Fortunately it's close by.

Why can't you just use eBay shipping and choose USPS insurance?
Hmmmm, I must have missed that option.
I'll pay attention the next time.
Thanks.

In THEORY, ShipCover is supposed to have the claim validated if the buyer files a SNAD due to damage in transit. That was touted when they started offering it.
In practice, I have no idea how it really works.

Smart sellers don't buy insurance.

And if you do really want to buy insurance you would be better off with ANY insurance other than USPS.
Third-Pary insurance
Why would want to buy insurance from the same company that can`t deliver or can`t deliver without damage.

*shrug*
It's a coding choice to have ShipCover come up as the default insurance choice rather than USPS, so someone was apparently directed to set up the eBay shipping form that way. Given that nothing seems to get done around here without money behind it, I would assume that ShipCover paid eBay for that privilege.
All other things being equal, I would have set up the form so that if the user has already selected a USPS shipping method, then the default insurance choice offered would be USPS, not ShipCover, but there's probably equal parts of business clout and good coding practice fighting behind the scenes of that form design, and ShipCover won.

This, plus you are also more likely to get what you paid for shipping refunded. USPS does not refund shipping.
