Selling higher risk items

So, I have been reading posts on this board for a long while about phones, computers, gaming consoles, handbags being  “high risk” items.   What I do not understand is how, having higher feedback, negates that risk?  Experience?  If it is experience, please share the steps to take to minimize the possibility of getting scammed.   I do realize there is always a risk...are there steps to ensure “less risk” and more possibility of getting ruled in your favor should mayhem ensue?

Thanks.

Wouldn't a buyer simply file a SNAD complaint with eBay to get their money back?

Yes, the buyer has recourse.

But what about the seller - he has to refund and now has a broken vase that he cannot resell.

What difference does it make? The buyer has already paid for your insurance coverage, and you know that you're going to come out ahead in the long run (and very likely in the short run as well). If you executed a self-insurance scheme properly, that money is set aside as a reserve fund, and all you're doing is playing with what ought to be house money.

This is not "another angle that can work." This is logic and basic math and statistics.

Re: Selling higher risk items

I've been sitting on my brand new Iphone 6 for like 3 years now too afraid to list it here on ebay. Seeing all these posts about cell phone scams has scared me off. It's just now a really nice paper weight on my desk.

The longer you sit on it, the less of a scam target it becomes because the less new and hawt it is. Therefore, the risk of listing it decreases over time. I'll bet what you'd get for it is a mere fraction of what iPhone Xs are going for.

Besides, you're not exactly a noob.

Re: Selling higher risk items

Since the buyer can get their money back by filing a SNAD complaint, why would a seller buy insurance?

By which I mean, you're not an obvious target for a scammer.

Re: Selling higher risk items

Self insuring if based on your ASP for recovery time. My ASP is $34.75 with mybe 20 to 40 items going over the $100.00 mark a year ( just depends on my mood) so self insuring if you take a hit early you'd be years recovering from the loss. Being a seller on ebay it could end tomorrow you cannot long range plan anything on this site...

How much did you pay out versus how much you got back?

Insurance is the cost of doing business.

I sell 3-5k of goods per month,I dont want to see my sales drop because a shipment went amok,my shipping and handling charge often pays for the insurance premium

Put lime in the coconut and call me in the morning !

Why would your sales drop if a package went amok?

Re: Selling higher risk items

Insurance is worthless if the buy-uh-scammer does not cooperate with you in filing a claim.

Scammer files a case with ebay, you either refund and hope you can get your money back from insurance OR say return for refund and insurance is voided.

Re: Selling higher risk items

I'm in the process of being scammed out of my money (around $1,000) on an item I recently sold. I have another thread going on here for FedEx redirect scam. I have since learned that USPS and UPS also offer package redirection.

How can you ship an item over $250 that has online proof of delivery and prevents package redirection?

Or is it just too risky to sell high dollar items here considering the above and chargebacks from fraudulent credit card usage?
