I handle unpaid item cases manually but I'm considering switching to automatic. When a customer returns an item and they're refunded that item incorrectly appears in my reminders as eligible for a UPI case. If UPIs are automated would cases be opened after buyers are refunded for returns?

No, once you've refunded a buyer, he stays refunded. He fell off the UPI Assistant's radar when he made his original payment to you.

I might not be understanding your question very well, but let me try this
UPI (Unpaid items disputes) would not have any returns because nothing was ever paid for.
I use the automated system and have for years. I only do fixed price listings so when a buyer agrees to buy something but does not follow through with the payment the transaction goes in your awaiting payment section. The entire process handles itself from there.
I do not even know when there are UPI cases going because I rarely even look at the awaiting payment unless I am getting low on iventory for an item I might check to see if there are any awaiting payment for this item before I adjust the inventory.
I do not have any communications from eBay for these events either. I may have a setting telling eBay to not send me this notifications?
I am not sure why an UPI can or would connect with a return in any way?

Let me try this with visuals.
When I click the link in the above screenshot the item they say is eligible for a UPI case is one that was already paid for, shipped to buyer, return requested (buyer changed mind), shipped back to me, and refunded through the eBay request.
The system looks at this refunded item as being unpaid and therefore tells me it's eligible for a UPI.
If I change from manual to automated UPIs is the system going to incorrectly open a UPI case for this and future returned & refunded items?

@goodluckselling I should have specified that the screenshot is from the Seller Hub Overview page.

OK, I will ignore that it says these items are eligible for UPI and implement the automated assistant. Thanks for your input, guys.

You're welcome... Yes, what you're seeing is boilerplate stuff that simply lists all the possible options, but you cannot actually file a UPI on someone who's already paid once and been refunded. Not all the listed options necessarily work at any given time. (Sometimes they will never work. For example, "Sell Similar" is shown as an option on a Second Chance listing on the Seller Hub, but if you select it, the page breaks. Sell Similar has, to my knowledge, never been an option on the SCO.)
