Selling high quantity of computers

HI, my company wants to sell off about 100 computers over maybe a years time.

We are replacing them and want to get back some of the cost of these by selling the old ones.

Do we need to do a business account or just create a personal account with the companies president as the account holder?

I would guess each PC would sell between $125 and $350

Thanks

Newbies are so cute and innocent.

To be honest, setting up the account is the least of your problems.

Try reading some of the threads here to see why selling computers here is not a good idea for even the most experienced seller.

If this is just going to be a temporary thing, you don't really need to have a store. The first issue you will run into is that new sellers are generally restricted in the amount and number of items they can sell until a proven track record of sales has been reached. After that, they will raise your limits if everything has gone well. The restriction is usually $1000 and 10 items.

There are a lot of promotions run for single style sellers so you can get on board with some free listings, etc.  There is an awful lot of information to make yourself familiar with, so it will require some reading time to go through the user agreement and policies that eBay has. Even reading through these boards and/or asking questions if you are unsure of of anything will help. Better safe than sorry.

Good luck!

Thanks for the reply. I was thinking more from a tax persepective as well.

I myself have been an ebay user for about 20 years and have a 400 pos rating.

I am the IT guy so tasked with this ha ha ha.

Thanks again

Not saying it is impossible but as she suggests, know and learn from other's experiences with selling computers, so you have the best outcome.  New sellers may have issues with selling something like this, and it is best to be prepared.  That's all.  The more knowledge you have, the better equipped you are.

Re: Selling high quantity of computers

Thank you.

This person I am sure is very good at what he does as an IT person.

But selling on a third party venue is a whole different game.

The account he posted on is a buyers account and I do not see where he has sold anything on it and nothing in the last 6 months.

If he does have an experienced selling account, he should come back on that one and we could advise further.

Sorry my edit has gone wonky.

Part of my post is gone, but I do want to say that Emerald is a  well known, and very respected poster who is extremely knowledgable.

She has helped a LOT of people through the years!

Re: Selling high quantity of computers

Yes, there is a market for used computers.

As noted, your employer won't be able to put them all up at once, especially in a high fraud category like computers.

Do we need to do a business account or just create a personal account with the companies president as the account holder?

Your accountant is the one to talk to about that.

If the owner is a sole owner proprietorship, he can sell them himself.

If the company is limited liability, you'll need to sell as the company.

The Paypal account would be a business account and probably should be attached to the company bank and credit card accounts.

It would probably be a good idea to list the computers a few at a time until the restrictions are lifted. So if there are any one-off replacements in the near future, or if the company has other goods they could sell, including other obsolete office equipment or whatever the company makes, starting early would be sensible.

If you are going to get roped into this as the eBay expert, since you have an account, make sure you are compensated for it.  You don't know how much time goes into preparing, listing, packaging (!!!), and shipping.

And DON"T let the company use your account especially not your Paypal account.

(You'd be amazed at the stories we've heard.)

As always, you are most welcome!

Yes, being an IT person would be an advantage in this case.  He is wise that the consulted the Board since he would be new to selling.  Having been a buyer helps as he has seen things from the other side, so to speak.

Has not bought on that account in at least 6 months.

And in that time, imo things have gone from bad to worse here.

There can be lots of changes in six months.

Spring and Fall Updates, for one.

Site re-design for another.

Revised UAs.

The worst one for me is that the scams seem to be coming at us faster than ever.

Re: Selling high quantity of computers

Are you in the US?  Will you be shipping from the company premises?

You should create a new account in the company's name for financial purposes as there are special rules for asset disposal.

List one or two machines at a time.  Include as much detail as possible.  Include basic company information also, but be sure NOT to post any kind of contact information.  Make your listings look professional, but not too slick and polished.  Use any past experience you have to make your listings look like they're not from somone who has never used the site.  If you can deter the crooks who tend to try to prey on new sellers, you're already waay ahead.

If sold, wait for the deals to be completed including arriving at the buyer and maiking sure they're satisfied.  Go for the FB without asking for it.  That will help build reputation for following listings.

Of course, you know to wipe HDDs and restore to factory settings correct?

And you're aware that tech items present legal issues if export outside the US is involved?  I would avoid international shipping for that reason alone.

I've bought a number of used PCs and won't hesitate to do so IF the listing looks like one I can trust.

Re: Selling high quantity of computers

True I mostly buy on e-bay and I have purchased in the past 6 months for whatever that matters.

All computers would be completely wiped and the orginal version of windows restored.

I would def not sell out of the country. Wow! I am so shocked at all the negative stuff on this board!

I don't blame anyone and appreciate the feedback but I am surprised.

Thought it would be easy to sell a few PC's here and there over the next year.  I am aware of all the shipping and packing, etc as I ship computers all over the county for my company.

Everyone makes E-Bay sound so evil now.

Yikes

Thanks for the feedback

Just remember, it's the deals gone bad that show on the board.  The other 95%+ of sales never get seen on the boards.
