Selling high quantity of computers

HI, my company wants to sell off about 100 computers over maybe a years time.

We are replacing them and want to get back some of the cost of these by selling the old ones.

Do we need to do a business account or just create a personal account with the companies president as the account holder?

I would guess each PC would sell between $125 and $350

Thanks

Re: Selling high quantity of computers

These should be good sellers. I would suggest US sales only and no international payments.

This would protect you from some scams.

People sell used computers all the time. Be careful in your description because people expect a new iMac computer at a 1990 dell price.

Re: Selling high quantity of computers

Just think about being on the finacial hook for the merchandise for 180 days should be enough to make you rethink about trying to make the Co. a couple bucks and any interraction between your account and a new account you set up in someone elses name you'll be branded as a crook and both accounts closed permantly...

True I mostly buy on e-bay and I have purchased in the past 6 months for whatever that matters.

All computers would be completely wiped and the orginal version of windows restored.

I would def not sell out of the country. Wow! I am so shocked at all the negative stuff on this board!

I don't blame anyone and appreciate the feedback but I am surprised.

Thought it would be easy to sell a few PC's here and there over the next year.  I am aware of all the shipping and packing, etc as I ship computers all over the county for my company.

Everyone makes E-Bay sound so evil now.

Yikes

Thanks for the feedback

Selling on Ebay is NOT for the faint hearted!

One thing that I don't see mentioned is that any money you make is NOT YOURS for at least 180 days. That's the amount of time Paypal allows for a buyer to return something and get their money back. Credit cards may have even longer dispute times.  It is very, very difficult for a seller to win a SNAD (significantly not as described) case. If someone wants to get your item for nothing, they will, and there is very little/nothing you can do to stop them.

The easier you are to offend the easier you are to control.

Re: Selling high quantity of computers

Make for a ugly day to walk into bosses office and say HEY you know those 10 pcs we sold two months ago for $3500.00 well the money is gone as well as the PCs. That burns into a person brain and you'll forever be known as the guy that cost us $3500.00.....

Re: Selling high quantity of computers

You company would undoubtedly need to set up a business account since they would be required to do so by law in most states.  They are a business and, as such, bound by certain regulations such as collecting sales tax on sales to the end consumer.  In addition, they will probably need to have a business PayPal account since many buyers are going to want to pay by credit card through PayPal.

Re: Selling high quantity of computers

Personally after having sold computers on ebay, I do much better on Craigslist and Facebook marketplace. Buyers can come and see comp in action, I get cash, and no ebay and Paypal fees, no shipping hassles, or returns. I have even picked up repairs from people who have bought from me. Win Win situation to me

Sorry that has been happening, Emerald.

Unfortunately, it is doubtful that the OP's company would want to have people shopping for a cheap computer on Craigslist stopping by their offices to browse through their obsolete computer equipment to find a bargain.

Thank you.

Did you see the other thread where a seller is posting that he is concerned a scammer is going to send back a lower quality computer than what he sent?

Re: Selling high quantity of computers

I guess I will sell these slow and a couple at a time. I have sold things (and back in the day) a bunch of computer stuff. Never had an issue.  Hoping to just sell to people wanting a decent deal on a laptop and to people with only good feedback.   Not going to overthink and stress on it.

I will be careful as usual. Sad E-bay has come to this.   Maybe I can find schools or the like that are looking for bulk purchases of  low cost but still useable computers.

Thanks eveyone for your time and comments!

From a tax perspective, you do not want to use your eBay account or your PayPal account.

You do not want your social security number tied to your employer's (potentially) taxable income.

I doubt you will encounter a lot of fraud selling low value computers ($150 or less). But make sure your company understands that returns and SNADs do happen, and that fees, losses, and shipping costs could theoretically put you in the negative.

Re: Selling high quantity of computers

Thanks. I created a new account and PP account for them with their info. We are  moving to chromebooks and selling these as we go.  Def most computers will be $300 and less.
