Selling fee

Hello,

I can't believe how high the fees went up. I sold something for $45 and ebay took $9.31 in fees. I'm only getting $35.69 and I put free shipping so I need to put out another $6-8 to ship. Did I do something wrong? If not are there any ebay calculators? Thank you

Seller Hub ->  payments  -> summary -> recent activity -> see all

Then look at the sale in question.  If you view it, you will see eBay's calculation.

I haven't found an eBay fee calculator other than the old fashioned pencil, paper and calculator.

When I sell something outside of my normal categories, I always check eBay's documentation to see what the fee rate will be.   I usually work backward.....add together what is the price I expect to sell the item for,  shipping I expect to pay, calculate a potential sales tax (my tax is I bought is .925 so I use that) to come up with a final "price",  then I apply the fee.  At that point I have a pretty good idea what my 'profit' will be after I subtract the cost of the item, the fee, the tax and the shipping.

Do I make any sense?

Hi, just to clarify, you state “I can't believe how high the fees went up..”. As compared to when?

eBay’s fees haven’t changed much over the last few years. For example, looking back at when eBay used PayPal to process payments, the Final Value fees i currently pay in the new Managed Payments program are essentially the same as they were then with PP. For most categories, that is 12.9% plus 30 cents now, as compared to about 10% plus 2.9% plus 30 cents then.

What have gone up are other costs to do business, like shipping charges and supplies.

Sellers who list with F/S to attract buyers usually add the projected shipping fee into the item price.

I don't think you understand how "free shipping" works.

There is no such thing as free shipping.  Somebody has to pay for it.  The seller.

Free shipping means the cost of shipping is added to the sale price of the item.

The seller needs to calculate the shipping cost into the price of the item.

$10 item + $6 shipping.

$16 item with free shipping.

It's the same thing.

Did you have promoted listing on the item?  at what %?

While checking on the fee's, you might want to read the digital item policy.

Have a great day.

I've honestly been selling on ebay since 2012 and I've never seen it cost that much of a fee so wasn't sure if it went up ^^" Do you know of any calculators I can use?

no I haven't promoted any of my listings 😞 Does the fees calculate by seller level by any chance?

I've been selling since 2012 so of course, I know how free shipping works haha. I could have removed that part since it's irrelevant but I was tired when typing it.  I added that to the item price but didn't realize how high the fees were. As per to my question, is there a calculator I can use or if i did something off.

also if its 12.9% that would make it $5.80 fee + .30 right? I sold the item at $45

Random thoughts,

Some categories are charged a higher percent.

Maybe you accidentally applied additional fees, like bold print, or appearing in more than one category.

The 12.9 is applied to whatever tax there may have been.

Click on the link by the item to look at the fees, to see what you were charged for.

@ditzyypanda  If you use Excel you can set up a table with the calculations.  I have one set up using 3 different fees with free shipping and buyer paid shipping.  It helps a lot.  I calculate all the taxes at 9.75% because that's the highest I've see taxes so far so it's safe.    All I have to do is put in the price I'm selling for and the shipping cost and it calculates the rest.   Here is what my table looks like:
