Selling clothing? Stop buying items

You are not going to make any money selling clothing now or in the foreseeable future. Many more people are working from home and are selling the clothes they already have. All you have to do is look at the ridiculously low sold prices on most apparel ( or your own piddling traffic to know that you are not going to be moving much inventory.
Sure, shopping for items to sell is the fun part, but I strongly suggest you stop buying inventory RIGHT NOW and resign yourself to moving your existing items at little or no profit after fees (if you are lucky to sell them at all...I’m now giving inventory to charity just to get it out of the way).
I don’t see this as eBay’s fault and there’s no benefit in complaining about them. It’s a simple matter of too many sellers and too few buyers driving prices through the floor. Promoting items won’t help; faster shipping won’t help; longer return periods won’t help  All those watchers? They aren’t going to become buyers until you’re willing to lower your price—a lot.  This is simply a business you no longer want to be in.

Selling clothing? Stop buying items

I don’t bother with items that sell for five dollars. Too much work for a $3 net. This week I sold a vintage Ralph Lauren jacket for $90. Two Robert Graham shirts for $79 and $39 but in the week before I sold fewer items. Overall I make about half of what I did 8 years ago.

So are you leaving Ebay too? Just curious as your post implies so. Not saying I disagree with anything you wrote as I agree with pretty much everything you wrote.

You are entirely correct -- the clothing category is the most saturated category on eBay; however, there are apparently sellers who are still making money selling clothing.

A few pages back, we heard from a seller who wanted eBay to start limiting the number of listings a seller could post in that category.  Can you picture that?

Selling clothing? Stop buying items

A year and a half ago, my daughter quit her high paying job to become self employed.  My first thought was "But I don't want to support my 35 year old daughter"!  My second thought was "good for you".

She watched me do the same thing 15 years ago.

She sells woman's clothing.  All types, but mostly vintage.  And shoes, so many shoes.

She treats this like any other job.  She puts in her days work every day and makes a respectable living.

So just because some are having issues with making profit, doesn't mean that it's not happening for others.

One can say that about many niche markets, inclusive of the one I sell in. One niche market I have never understood, was that of selling books. Something as ubiquitous as books;  And there are many sellers of books on eBay, who always seem to be enjoying brisk sales. Hey, good for them. Even in the Kindle (and similar) era, they seem to make a good go of it.  I understand the whole first editions, antique classics, the out-of-print, and that type of thing, but even so. Apparently, they have chosen one of the CORRECT fields to sell in.

Guess all those "discount" clothing stores and mall stores should "lock the doors and throw  away the key" too.

Just noticed that 8 of your 12 (or 75%) of your current active listings are clothing or clothing related - a belt, some caps and several footwear items.  Plus a healthy %  (my SWAG  over 50%) of the buyers feedback left for you were also clothing related - shirts, scarfs, etc.

Me thinks the age old idiom of " whistling (or talking) through your hat" might apply here.

FYI our Goodwill store in this region offer items of a give color code  for $.99+ tax on each Monday.  There  are many resellers that load up their carts and sell them on line for $5 or $6 + shipping or much more depending on the brand label.  One can make  about 50%+GP on the total selling price (not mark up %) after all selling costs.  People will pay a bit more for the convenience of online shipping even for tomatoes, eggs, bacon, milk etc. especially during this Covid -19 era.

Used sell pre-owned clothing and footwear and did quite well.
