Hello,
I am new to selling on Ebay. A buyer wants to buy my item but request I send them a Paypal invoice, along with a next day UPS shipment.
How do I protect myself to make sure the transaction is honored?

It's a scam. Do NOT reply to that person. Anything you put up for sale should be in fixed price buy it now format, with immediate payment required (no auctions).

You protect yourself by NEVER doing ANYTHING like that. Ebay is simple. You list, buyer buys, buyer pays (through ebay). The only 'questions' would be of the product. Do not exchange phone numbers or emails. All communication is done through ebay messaging ONLY. Paypal is NOT a way to get paid here, you can only get the money that a buyer pays by signing up for Managed Payments where they deposit into your checking account. There is NO OTHER WAY. When you list, you also list how you are going to ship. Never ship to another address. Never ship 'another way' (usps or ups or fedex, whatever you choose, although almost always best to use USPS only).

Your buyer is asking you to violate eBay policy.
You cannot "protect yourself" because your buyer wants you to circumvent what little protection eBay gives you.
Your buyer needs to buy the item through eBay and pay through eBay. But he won't, because he is trying to scam you.

don't walk away from this "deal".........RUN
that beautiful item, and you being a 'new seller' are going to attract every scammer out there....
ignore them, do everything through ebay and their authenticity program for at least 'some' protection from scammers

Buyers pay directly through eBay. They can pay with Paypal, debit or credit cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay, and they do this through eBay. They do not need any of your information to pay. If the buyer is asking for your Paypal or other personal information, they are a scammer.
Scammers will try to get you to take the sale off of eBay, or get your personal information so they can send you a fake payment email, hoping you are too new and naive to verify that you have actually been paid. No LEGITIMATE buyer needs that information, EVER.
Here are some red flags to watch out for.
1. Buyer asks for your email address, Paypal address
2. Buyer sends you a phone number to text/call him/her
3. Buyer asks you to buy gift cards to go with the order
4. Buyer asks you to send the item to a different address after paying
5. Buyer wants you to send the item overnight/express and will pay you a lot extra to do this
6. Buyers says that they cannot pay through the eBay website and sends you a link to click on so that the payment will go through
7. Buyer offers more for your item than the price you have it listed for
If ANY of the above happen, do not contact the buyer or respond to any messages from them. Block them here: https://www.ebay.com/bmgt/BuyerBlock This will prevent them from buying from you.
If they actually purchased, after four full days do an unpaid item cancellation. You can do that here: https://www.ebay.com/help/selling/getting-paid/cancelling-transaction?id=4136 Once you do that you can relist.
Also if they actually purchased report the buyer: https://www.ebay.com/help/selling/resolving-buyer-issues/reporting-issue-buyer?id=4084 Use the reason "asking to complete a sale off eBay".

You never sold anything on ebay and you start with a 5,000 dollar watch! That person is a scammer. They are setting you up for the a fake PAYPAL notice that they paid you. Then they want you to ship UPS incase they get arrested to avoid being charged with a federal crime. Block that buyer. Be ready for the next scammer.
Immediately add the following text to this listing.
ALL payments MUST be done through the Ebay PAY NOW button. ALL payments WILL be verified in MY Ebay. We only ship to the address provided in the Ebay payment. Signature confirmation will be added. ALL questions MUST be asked before bidding.
If you do sell this item, you MUST add SIGNATURE CONFIRMATION.
Now if you do not understand what is MY EBAY or know where to find it, I would suggest that you end that listing and LEARN to do ebay before you get ripped off.
Have you signed up for MANAGED PAYMENTS? Have you provided ebay with a bank account and has that account be verified by Ebay? Have you given Ebay your social security number? It's the law.
Now let's say you do sell that watch for $5,000.oo, Ebay is going to hold that money for 30 days. ALL new sellers have their money held for up to 30 days but this is not a ten dollar item so you know it's going to be 30 days.
It's not easy selling on ebay during these difficult times. You started with a very expensive item. Goodluck.

You can NEVER EVER exchange phone numbers or email addresses with buyers. If you want to ship USPS, NEVER changed to UPS or FED EX at the request of a buyer. Anything over 750.oo MUST have signature confirmation in order to protect your seller protection.

Keep all messaging about your item on ebay. Payment is only through ebay.
Stay safe and keep it on ebay.

Only accept payments via the ebay managed payment system. Since you're a new ebay seller, please be careful with such requests. 😎

You're going to lose that watch if you do what the buyer is requesting. You also have a no returns policy. That's going to get you in trouble. Ebay has a Money back guarantee and given the fact you are dealing with a dishonest person, they could file an untruthful claim and you'd loose the watch and the money.
Honestly, take that listing down and sell it to a pawn shop or a local jeweler there in Brooklyn. Ebay is not the place for an item this expensive being sold by a brand new seller.
Remember, never list anything you cannot afford to lose.
Happy Holidays, Bradley.

Since you are new, why did you start selling such an expensive item as your first thing?
Isn't there a less expensive item to learn how to sell on ebay with?

Brad:
You ask how you can protect yourself to make sure the transaction is honored.
To quote the response from monica-sells:
"ignore them, do everything through ebay and their authenticity program for at least 'some' protection from scammers"
To reiterate -- Do Everything Through eBay !!!
The sale of a high-ticket item by a new seller, as others have pointed out, is a scam magnet. Unscrupulous people see an easy mark.
Hope this works out for the best!

Scammers always target newbies. Ignore.
