So I sold my first item pretty quickly and it was about $140. It says the item has been sold but the money is still pending like it's not showed as paid yet. I contacted the buyer and he showed me screenshots of his screen showing that it's paid. He said he paid with PayPal but I didn't have paypal linked up yet so I linked my paypal to my ebay just now. How do I recieve the payment? Do I have to ship the item first for the money to recieve?

Never ship before you receive the payment that has cleared, no matter what the buyer sends or shows you.
Other members will be along to help you through this over the weekend.

@ha-7609 - NO, never ship any item before you have verified proof that the money is in your PayPal account.
As far as receiving payment, you are a new seller, so eBay imposes a 21-day hold on your funds until such time they can see you're trustworthy. However, there are ways to get that lifted, but let's not get into that now.
Log into your PayPal account directly. Under "Activity" can you see any trace of the buyer's payment for your item? When you linked your eBay account to your PayPal account, are you certain you used the same email address as is associated with your PayPal account? Even a small typo can cause a linking problem.
If you just linked the two accounts the "linkage" may not be immediate - I'm not sure about that. Wait a couple of hours then call PayPal direct and tell them what is the problem and see if they can troubleshoot it.
In the meantime, DO NOT ship your item and don't get into any additional back and forth with your buyer until you get this sorted out. Scams are abundant on eBay and it's not unheard of that buyers will send you proof of payment which is fraudulent in an effort to get you to ship the item without actually having paid for it.
Call PayPal and see if they can resolve the problem, then come back here with an update so others may be able to provide additional advice. Good luck.

To reiterate what the other responses have said, Never EVER send any item you sold before you get confirmation from PayPal that the payment has been received, whether it's your first eBay sale or your 1,001st.
It's been a while since I sold anything, but as I recall, PayPal would send me an e-mail saying "The buyer has paid. It is now OK to send the item," or words to that effect.

The first rule of eBay ... never, Never NEVER ship until your PayPal account confirms that the buyer has paid, the money is indeed in your account, and PayPal says it’s OK to Ship.
How did you contact the buyer?
The second rule of eBay ... never, Never, NEVER give the buyer your email address. They do NOT need it for payment, regardless of what they may say. Everything they need to know about paying you is in the listing, and all communication needs to be done through the eBay messaging system

I didn't think that you could even sell an item unless your ebay and PP accounts were already linked. Are you sure that the PP address you put in the payment area is correct? If so, you might have to phone PP...if you actually did sell the item and then link the accounts afterwards, I'm not sure how that would work.

First thing, you need to check that you had the correct email address on the listing to receive payments. To check, start to relist the item, then scroll down to the payments section and carefully check the email address.
Now, since you said that the buyer sent you a screenshot showing they made payment, let's assume that they did pay. In that case, you had a problem with the email address for payments on the listing.
If the email address has a typo in it, then the payment may be in limbo, or if the typo address is registered with PayPal, then the payment was sent to the wrong account, the account that is associated with the email address ont he listing. Either way, you will need to call PayPal customer service and ask for their help to straighten out the problem.
If the email address is correct, then you may need to confirm the email address before you can receive payments to it. Again, you will need to call PayPal customer service to fix this. They will be able to tell you how to confirm the email address. It's easy and fast, and once you follow PayPal's instructions, the payment will appear in your PayPal account and you will be able to ship.
I know about this because I was once on the buyer's side of this, and I had to take the initiative to call PayPal about it. They sent an email to the seller with the instructions to confirm their email address, and within a few hours the seller had confirmed and the payment went through.
