Selling - Ebay Needs to Improve Image

It is my strong opinion that Ebay needs to badly improve there image with sellers and buyers -

There are far to many buyers on here that are complaining about policies, price, and how the platform performs. To be honest it is hard to blame any of them when in fact recent and past changes have not been well received. Ebay's image to the seller is to capture as much of the profit as possible and with complete disregard to the millions who have assisted building this platform. Many sellers do not feel like they are a partner of Ebay and Ebay could care less if a seller closes shop. Routinely it appears that Ebay does not listen to the customer and only listens to what is profitable for them.

The buyers feel that other (1 big 1) have better pricing, delivery, and more professional sellers and have captured a great share of online market place sales. 1 of the two companies did a far greater job promoting its site and products and have far greater amount of visitors and products due to the investment.  Many times when friends and relatives bring over shipping supplies from there online purchases rarely do I see the EBAY brand but always see a different one.

Now ebay has a choice to make - They can continue doing business as usual and in turn charge sellers even more as they try to meet there forecast to wall street or they can begin investing in the product and in the sellers. At this time it is my strong opinion that if they do not try to improve the image this site will be far different in 2-3 years from now.

One does not have to look far to see the screams from sellers that they have been pushed to far, are making less profit than before, and feel that Ebay does not have it's side. A business can not continue operating as it is with this much negative attention. This info is spilling over to the buyers and is turning them anti Ebay as well. Additionally your sellers are also customers and many of them have already or plan to taking there ball home with them.

I fear it may be to late as traffic and sales are 20% off from last year in my case and is being reported the same by others. This trend is not going to correct itself and discounting product is not a sole corrective action. Selling cheaper equals less profits and less profits equals less buying power.

The ball is in Ebay's court but I fear they will do little different and is why I have ended my Annual subscription and I am running month to month now even if it is costing me an additional $50.00 a month. I just never know when I am going to have to close up shop as business needs to improve and status quo is not the answer.

This same prediction has been made on this board regularly for a decade now. I have no doubt that if people continue to make this prediction over the next next couple decades, it may eventually come true.

Re: Selling - Ebay Needs to Improve Image

I don't love every change.  Nether do I always appreciate constant and seemingly unnecessary changes.  BUT, I have been here a LONG time.  I can tell you, many of the changes have been important.  They've addressed real problems.  Also, given the service we get as buyers AND as sellers, the fees are pretty reasonable.  Any little thing that goes wrong, who do we call?  EBAY.  They maintain a building, offer training, listen to our disputes and try to resolve them the best way they can.  It's tricky because everyone is spread out in different locations.  Overall, they do an amazing job.

Hey, I've had my frustrations, too.  I do not mean to make light of yours.  I'm just saying that taking the long view, I think they do a good job for us and the fees are fair for what we get.  I also thing their reputation is fine.  Anything that happens on eBay could just as easily happen elsewhere.

I'm not saying I love every policy.  I am saying that I have confidence in the process overall.

This is a very small portion of overall buyers and sellers on eBay.

Millions of transactions go smoothly and profitably.

Re: Selling - Ebay Needs to Improve Image

It's been this way for over a decade now, and all current management can think of is ways to take a larger % from sellers, in every underhanded way possible. I don't expect anything to change, even if there were a major shakeup at the top levels of management. You are correct in that their current course is unsustainable. My prediction is that ebay will be bought out at a fire sale price within the next 2-3 years. It will be up to the new owners to decide eBay's future, and depending on who that is, ebay could cease to exist.

Sorry this is not logical. Obviously you can't poll every user, thats why companies use sample sizes. Every sample size I've seen shows people are largely against Ebay. Its not just the boards, you can look up Ebay reviews on the internet, with much larger sampling sizes and you will see that in NONE of these does Ebay get a favorable rating from the people using it.

If thats not enough, Ebays financial reports tell the story when compared to other E-Commerce platforms. Sure good things happen here, they also happen at Daves hamburger stand down the road from my house but more people hate it then love it. Thats not good long term

@weschurch

You've often posted that eBay sellers have been leaving in droves over the past decade, so I assume you can provide some documentation to support that assertion. I'd really like to read that research, so I'd appreciate some links that indicate that's the case.

I mean, like, research--not a Facebook page of disgruntled, unsuccessful former eBay sellers, or Yelp reviews of people (buyers or sellers) who have an agenda.

Instead, I would prefer to take a look at some verifiable data from a reliable source.

And yet it is has more listings, more buyers, more sellers, and more merchandise volume than any other website devoted to third-party sales. And the number of listings, buyers, sellers, and merchandise volume continue to grow.

All of this is entirely false but thanks anyways

I'd be interested in seeing your list of websites devoted to third-party sales that have more listings, more buyers, more sellers, and more merchandise volume than eBay.

I'd also like to read a response to my Message #7 above.
