Sellers should learn not to say NO.

I need six  1" glass marbles for a project.

I came across a listing for 2 pounds of 1" glass marbles for $23.99 with free shipping.

I'm not sure how many marbles are in 2 pounds but i'm sure t's way more than i need. 

I messaged the seller and explained how i only need 6 marbles. If he would be willing to sell me 6,  let me know how much.

The seller replied with "sorry such a small amount is not cost worthy for me to sell".  Why would he say that without knowing how much i'm willing to pay for 6 of them?  Why not make me an offer?  6 marbles for $5 or 6 marbles for $10 or 6 marbles for $20 ... whatever he thinks is worth his time and effort?   But to just say "NO" is very poor business sense in my opinion.

EXAMPLE:  I went to a burger place once and asked if i could buy just the buns for a burger.  I was told NO.  What they should have told me was YES, but it will cost me the same price as a burger.

So, you want the seller to create a new listing for 5 or 6 marbles, end the old listing, and create a new listing for the rest of the marbles along with new description and photos For $5? I wouldn't do that.

I've been interested in some of the candies you sell but I don't want to buy a whole bag of something only to find out I don't like it. Would you sell me just 2 pieces of something so I can try it?

If 2 pounds equals $23.99, common sense says six marbles would be $5. Surely you would not expect free shipping as well? So you looking at about $10 for the six marbles.  I did a quick search and saw several listing for 20 marbles for about $10. As the man sang, "you can't always get what you want".  In this case, you may need to buy the 20 piece set to get your six.

IMO most sellers don`t want to be pushed into a position of having to say no. Most just want to sell their items as listed and hassle free with the least amount of "busy work" possible.

I've always been a sucker for trying to accommodate every similar request  I've gotten in the past, but I'm much less likely now to do this. 

First of all, I really now dislike that type of message because I'm afraid of being accused of making an outside of ebay sale.

Second, it takes time to create a new listing with new photos.  The last time I did that the potential buyer then didn't like the price I came up with for their request and didn't buy after all.  So if you do this, at least give the seller your idea of pricing to save time and help them decide if they will do this for you.

if I needed six marbles I would not have bothered the seller at all  but  just went ahead and  buy the 2 pounds worth for $23.99, give the seller good feedback. When they arrive I would take my 6 out that I wanted and relisted the rest at $27.99

or go to Walmart. 

My opinion NO!  is a very important word to know when you are in business. I get myself into trouble or too much work because I have a habit not to say NO! to people

You can either buy the burger and let what parts you need be your own business.  Or...

You can buy buns without the burger from another vendor.  But chances are, they likely won't split a package to accommodate you only needing two.  Haven't you ever noticed the patties, hot dogs and corresponding buns are always sold in quantities that don't match up??

Buyers should learn to accept the word NO from a seller.

Lots of sellers have said NO to me, I've accepted their decision and moved on.

OP, just buy from one of the sellers offering a smaller quantity.

Would you do it for $10?  Would you do it for $20.  At some point you would do it.  So the answer shouldn't be no.

That's like someone offering to buy your car "name your price" and you saying it's not for sale. 

Congratulations to you that business is so good that you can turn down a potential customer without even knowing how much you'll be making.

inhawaii: How much were you willing to pay? You gave the seller no hint. Why didn't YOU just tell the seller up front. I only need six. I'm willing to pay "x" , as I realize you will need to create a new listing just for me.
