Seller performance

Hey guys I'm new to selling and had a question.  My total sales is 148,  taxes and fees 10,  selling costs 71 (47.5%),  net sales 68.  Being new is this good?  I thought selling costs should be less than my net sales or am I wrong.  Please explain.

What is included in your selling cost?    You stated you are not including fees, taxes or cost of goods.  So what IS included in your selling cost?

Yes, your selling costs SHOULD be lower than your net sales.  By a long shot.  Granted it's different for everyone, but I find your numbers very confusing.   If fees, taxes & item cost are not a part of your selling costs, what is?

I'm not adding or adjusting any with selling costs.  I'm giving numbers that I got from my ebay sellers page. It's  showing what I paid in shipping costs I assume.

I think I found the graph you're referring to.  I've never looked at it before.  My selling costs are 31% according to Ebay, but to the right of the graph is a breakdown of the all selling costs.   It includes a bunch of different things, including taxes/fees/postage, etc.   All the fees are broken down into 7 different kinds of fees.

Your fees seem disproportionately high & my selling costs are less than half of my net sales.   But you use the word assume, if you're looking at the chart I think you're looking at, there's no need to assume anything, as it's broken down into extreme detail, so you can tell where the costs are going.   You should be able to look at the breakdown & see why things are so out of whack for you.

Also, I see the chart & breakdown are for a 1 month period, since you're a new seller & are presumably having funds held for the 21 days (or something like that IDK exactly), it may simply be that the hold time is throwing your numbers out of whack, so that your monthly total does not reflect reality.  That's what I suspect.  You should be keeping track of your own numbers for accounting purposes.  I would go by what your numbers say, not Ebays.

Also, I should add, my percentage is a bit higher than most b/c I use PL's extensively.  I'm guessing as a new seller, you don't use PL's.   I think your numbers are just not reflective of a month b/c of the hold periods throwing them off.

Thanks.  I didn't think about the holds affecting the numbers.  When I did my own booking on it I came up with net 62.00.  Just didn't understand why ebay was showing different but that's prob why.  Also my first sale I didn't entirely know about printing ebay labels for shipping and doing it on my phone I charged myself double In shipping by printing the label twice.  I emailed ebay for a refund of that.  By the way whats a PL that you mentioned?

PL stands for Promoted Listings, you pay extra to have your listings promoted.   Probably a bit too advanced for you right now.

I'm pretty sure the holds are what's skewing your numbers.  Cost generally runs around 20-30%, but of course YMMV (your mileage may vary).
