Having been with ebay for years and 500 transactions, both selling and buying, i am now below standard. When i ended up in the hospital and couldn't ship the items i was selling i had a friend try to take over for me and ship what they could and contct all buyers to let them know what had occured. My rating remained at 100% as aall were contacted by her and properly informed. Niether Paypal nor ebay lost any money nor did any buyer.
I have now recovered from the hospital stay and health problems that put me there and listed again a couple of items. One item was purchased and i only now find out that paypal/ebay is withholding payment until i ship and the buyer receives the item.
What store will let you take an item home and check it out before you pay for it? what possible protection does a seller have that the buyer will not raise some reason to not want to pay or pay full price because they don't want to? Sorry ebay but i will not ship anything without receiving payment first...... just like any store i go to. Business can not afford to be put at risk of being scammed by buyers that know they have the upper hand and can renegotiate or refuse to pay for what they already have in their possesion. Done selling on ebay if the risk of getting paid is at the whim of the buyer. Pay me.... i ship, Hold my money, no ship...... no sell.
I would have thought that with no money lost by anyone, and rating still showing 100% with over 500 transactions, all parties aware of situation, what is happening that those of us caught in uncontrollable circumstance can be punished and have to accept this risk to continue selling on ebay. This just seems wrong to this oldog. My selling days on ebay are over until and unless this is adjusted in how sellers are treated.

The buyer pays. PP holds the funds. You get the funds after the buyer gets the widget. Consider it an escrow service.
You don't ship. You don't get paid. Buyer gets refunded.

And your defect rate goes up, putting you further behind, possibly getting you banned from selling

OP, that probably doomed your account on ebay. Canceling a sale on a whim is something ebay does not like and will give you a defect for. If you are below standard, that might be your final stroke.
Actually ebay's holding of funds in your account after an upheaval in the account is one of the rare things ebay does I agree with. Suppose your account had been hacked and taken over by thieves that sell loads, empty the paypal and run. The hold slows them down. And while irritating, the hold allows you to build back the reputation you lost when your shipping fell behind your usual efficient norm.
Once you restablish your normal practices, the hold will go away.

Buyer is not controlling the payment. Site policy for new-ish sellers is.

And now you've added a defect to the list. You need to realize that when you are below standard and have a low number of sales Paypal "holds" the money until the item is marked delivered. The buyer doesn't get to check the item out and then say "ok, let the funds go", it's strictly based on the shipper marking the item delivered.
You should really review the rules, guidelines and seller tutorials. It really looks like you haven't been keeping up with the changes.

$78.00 Best offer accepted
Not exactly the sword to throw oneself on. Or their selling future.

The buyer doesn't control the payment, you do. Ship quickly with delivery confirmation and your funds will be released three days after confirmation of delivery. Sorry to see that you cancelled the sale, because you earned a defect, which may well close your account. If you are able to sell again later, please spend some time reading the boards so you will know what to expect. Best of luck to you.

You will get a defect for cancelling the sale, however, I'm quite confident you won't care.

Your buyer had no idea you have a below standard rating and that his payment is being held. They just know they paid, and apparently, aren't getting their item now. It's no wonder so many buyers are turning away from ebay.
Your rating could have improved for you over time and the holds be dropped. I had all my payments held when I first started selling on a new ID even though I was established on another ID. I didn't freak out and refuse to send to my buyers what they paid for.

Considering your reaction to the temporary hold on funds..... I am not even going to mention the higher fees eBay charges for being below standard.... nope, won't even bring the subject up.
There was never yet an uninteresting life. Such a thing is an impossibility. Inside of the dullest exterior there is a drama, a comedy and a tragedy.

It may be too late since you have cancelled your last sale, but go here and read... https://pages.ebay.com/help/sell/seller-dashboard.html
good to hear you are well, being hospitalized is never a good situation.
The payment hold is explained in detail here... https://pages.ebay.com/help/pay/payment_unavailable.html
Contrary to popular belief 100% positive Feedback doesn't count towards the standard to which ebay holds ITs sellers. IT is likely when your friend helped you out they either didn't upload tracking fast enough or within the time frame ebay expects.

“What store will let you take an item home and check it out before you pay for it? “
The buyer DID pay for it. Your money was sitting safely in YOUR PayPal account, just waiting for the item to be delivered. The buyer had no more control over the money than if it had been released instantly.
I think you’ve made the right decision. Eventually, eBay would have reached the same conclusion and shut you down permanently.
