Scam bot possibly

I had an item listed with a buy it now. Was picked up and then messaged to text a number about sale. I used a google voice # to text back and immediately got a response about needing my username and paypal account for payment, outside the Ebay mechanism. Seemed very phishy to me so I cancelled the sale and relisted without a buy it now option. Have others experienced this type of thing?

Re: Scam bot possibly

A message that says "I am interested in your item, kindly text me", an offer greater than your buy it now price, or a request for a gift card is generally the start of a scam where the scammer winds up sending a phony PayPal email that makes it look like the seller has received a payment when none has actually been received. Scammers like to target new sellers, particularly those selling expensive items.

Sending contact information (text or email) prior to a transaction is a violation of eBay policy; this policy is designed to protect honest buyers and sellers from this sort of thing, and to prevent off-eBay sales.

Never buy a gift card for anyone unless you are giving a gift.

As a seller you should always check your PayPal account directly (not following a link in an email) to see if you have actually been paid prior to shipping. If an actual buyer does not send an actual payment, file an unpaid item dispute and go through that process to get your fees back and to give the "buyer" a strike -- and set your buying requirement to reject bids from users with two or more strikes.

eBay will likely remove the scammer's account shortly, but the scammer will just create a new one or hijack an old one and continue sending scam offers and messages. Sellers must remain wary of any user that wants the seller to violate eBay policy.

You can avoid many common scams by listing your item for a fixed price with immediate payment required and by not accepting any offers. That way the buyer must complete checkout and actually pay in order to proceed.

@usiq4884

Except under specifically defined circumstances, eBay policy forbids buyers and sellers to contact each other outside of the eBay messaging system.

If you had followed that rule and not "used a google voice # to text back," you wouldn't have run into that scammer.

Stop contacting people off eBay.

Yes, that's an old scam. List your BuyItNow with the Immediate Payment Required option selected (you may need the full desktop listing form to see the checkbox for that option), and that way no one can snatch your item off the market without actually paying you for it first.

That's not to say that there aren't plenty of other scams to watch out for as well, but the IPR option gets you past the fake-payment ones.

I used a google voice # to text back and immediately....

Don't do that anymore.  They are not buyers, they are criminals.

They use the ebay message system.  They will make legitimate offers as well and you won't find out until you accept that you have the run of the mill "text me" scammer.

If this is your first experience with these people, also be aware of the "change the address" scammers that also use the ebay message system to carry out their nasty deeds.

Block the ID and ignore.

Re: Scam bot possibly

I am so glad you picked up on the scam. Your instincts do you credit. Legitimate buyers do not need a seller's name, phone number, and PayPal address in order to buy an item. Any buyer just needs to click on the Buy It Now button and the checkout process runs automatically.

To clarify a point: while it is a policy violation to get or give contact information thru eBay messages prior to the sale, once the transaction has taken place that rule no longer applies of course. There is an exception to the no-contact-info rule. Some items may require discussion prior to the sale. Ebay allows a seller to place his phone number in his Ask A Question section. (When you select Contact seller and then Other on the Find answers page, you'll see an option to view the seller's phone number if they chose this option.) Link below has more info on this.
