A user accepted my counter offer and wanted to text with more pics and info. I said “sure no big deal” so we texted, I gave more info about the item. All good. Then he asks me to include 400 dollars in gift cards with the shipment to his “nephew” because he is in the Marines (sure he is). Obviously he will reimburse me for that…. I 100% shut it down and say I’ll no longer respond and message me on eBay if he needs anything.
So a couple questions, first of all, definitely a scam right? Secondly, can I go ahead and cancel order? Or wait & see if he doesn’t pay and then relist. I’d rather go ahead and cancel and relist ASAP but also don’t want to hurt my reputation/account (even though I don’t use it much).
Thanks.

Guys, it’s just a cell phone number, not DNA.
No need to incur astronomical expenses by changing device and phone number. It’s not more risky than having your cell phone number on some on a list being used by scammers to try and entice you into sending money or signing in to your bank account through a bogus link.

I gotta say this is kinda what I was thinking personally. Maybe I’m wrong, but I’d rather avoid buying a whole new phone because someone has it.

100%. Thank you. I appreciate all of the helpful advice and I will definitely ask more questions if I need to. I plan to do more selling in the future & hopefully it goes better than it’s starting.

Yeah! That's one of your big mistakes you made. I think it's an absolute fault to text to a random stranger.

Buyers do not get a Strike for requesting a cancellation.

scammers use free online text numbers, they never use a real phone. Just ignore him he will go away and try his scam on other eBayers.

And if you dont refund a customer who opens a case, Ebay will refund for you and debit your account. And if thats not paid, they will turn you over to collections and close your account permanently...so be careful and cooperative when a buyer opens a case.

Many Cell Phones have a way to Block a Number so they can not contact you.

& I went to Verizon & had my number locked to prevent any sim swapping

Yeah, I think you are correct, after all, in that you may not need to do all the phone and number changing. I'm ultra paranoid, and I do guess "ultra" is the key word, LOL. If you didn't let them in to your phone in any way, via links or by giving them your password, indeed, you should be fine if you didn't give them any information.
