Been on Ebay for 20 years. Sales are the worst they have ever been. What is going on?

I never have more than 45 listings at a time and haven't yet had to pay any listing fees even when a listing ends because it just gets relisted and the available free listings, as part of my 50 free listing a month, takes care of the listing fees. I average about 3 sales a week. I then list the amount of products I sold.
I feel sorry for sellers that are doing this for a living. I think that I've always used GTC for my listings so I really don't think that is at play here. I think the implementation of sales tax is what is driving down sales and that is what politicians and the Chamber of Commerce wanted. They want to drive traffic to physical stores and make it as unprofitable for buyers to purchase online as they can. I really think that when shoppers are checking out and get hit with tax it is making them pause and rethink their purchase.
I still think online has better prices than physical stores and it will just take time for the consumer to realize that even with the implementation of tax added to their purchase they will still be better off shopping online than at a physical location. Besides the benefit of lower costs, they will also save on gas (if they drive), not have to deal with crowds, and even be safer. What can be better than to make your purchase from the safety of your own home?
Don't give up hope. Things might still turn around for you yet.
Hmmm.. I know that when I walk into a B&M to buy an item, I don't take pause at the sales tax when I'm at the register. Not sure too many buyers online would either. I think the B&Ms have latched onto this as something that is allegedly hurting their businesses but I think its doubtful. In most areas, the sales tax isn't high enough to make a huge impact on the bill.
I do think the shipping is causing an issue, though. A 5lb, 18x18x6 costs $23 to ship to the east coast via ground service and $46 priority mail, while being only $7-$10 to ship to a nearby zone. That's as much or more than the item the box contains. Shipping shouldn't be 100%-200% of the item value.
Frankly, I don't think delivery times are as critical as some large vendors make them out to be and whats needed is a slower and cheaper delivery method. People are buying tons of Chinesium goods and seem to have no problem waiting 16-30 days to get their items.
I'm not sure what the total sales volume is on eBay but it sure seems like eBay ought to be able to negotiate much better rates than commercial plus with USPS.

Well after all ,,, there simply isn't enough money to pay for advertising when the execs keep lavishing themselves with more of the profits . It's sort of like how Congress does with voting for higher salaries but for only themselves. Tulips
Don't forget about the private company bar, as well.

I've been fighting poor sales for two years. Just when I figure out how to get them back up, they drop again. It's almost like Ebay finds out I've figured out how to make sales and adjusts their algorithm accordingly to make them drop again.
The last week I've been putting stuff up in lots with a 9.99 opening bid. I had my best week this year and I think my best in over a year, but still nothing compared to two years ago.
It's goo though, I need to clear this stuff out. I have way too much stuff and it's choking me out 🙂

I really think there is something to your post.
My buddy who sells for a living and I talk everyday and as screwed up as ebay is right now it seems like there is a variety of reasons why things are so bad, difficult to pin point just one.
I am down 40% last 30 which has never happened, but I listed over a hundred new items in past week and watchers increased by 25. While I don't use watchers as a barometer my items are being seen by enough that I gained 25 watchers, but sales terrible.
But then I talked to some one today who left ebay and sells on other platforms and said sales are great, who can figure this out?!

I agree that has to be a factor with some items, but what about sellers of unique items not found in stores?
Our sales are generally down and I don't think anyone is backing away because of sales tax.
There is little options for such items other than online or searching the country side for the stuff.

That's a very valid point and does make you wonder why we're all busting butt to get it to them in 2 days doesn't it?

lol tulips, but congress doesn't have to vote to get a pay raise. it is automatic if they don't vote. the only thing congress has to vote on is if they want the 'normal' percentage raise, or how much additional they want.
are you saying the ebay execs operate the same?

I have always used GTC so I had thought it wouldn't affect me. Now, I am thinking that since they forced all the sellers that did not use GTC to use it - it threw a wrench in the logarithm. This explanation is the only thing that makes sense to me. wheredidiputthatremote
It is the GTC ,, Everyone' s sales began to tank as soon as they started it . I keep getting this image of a large herd of sheep trying to squeeze through a 4 foot opening all at once . Tulips

What are these buyers doing? Why aren't they buying? ebay did something wrong, that's for sure.djdaniel
I keep asking those questions . Forty % of my items have at least one watcher ,, but some have multiple watchers. However they've been there for weeks and weeks but never actually make a purchase . This is my second weekend without a sale . I no longer have any hope with watchers . They don't mean a thing because something or someone is stopping them from buying . Tulips

I don't care how many excuses people make, it all comes down to the fact that the amount of people buying on Ebay is dwindling down rapidly. This place has been in a steady tailspin for years but it seems its in a full-fledged nosedive right now.weschurch
Yeah ,, I just began listing on another selling venue yesterday . I took note that the type of things I sell are almost sold out on that site . That means their sellers are doing a booming business . E bay is on life support . Tulips

Pretty much yeah,, but they probably show up for work more often than congress . Tulips

People are BROKE. Don't you believe the hype that Washington is pumping out. Rents are ridiculous - child care is thru the roof - many now choosing to stay home. Groceries go up every time I shop - do the store think I don't notice? The hotels here are laying off not hiring. Gas is ridiculous. Couple all that with the uncertainty of the future of America - folks are pulling back - a looming recession is scaring them to death. Are we going to war? It's all a mess. Mark my words - it's going to be this way until the next election is over and regardless of what happens it's going to be a long recovery. I'm not panicking yet but I did put my house up for sale. IF it sells I'm not buying another - I'll rent till the next market crash (on the way) and buy low. Think I'm kidding? No one is talking about the foreclosure rate. It's bumping up again. Try this just for kicks.
Google Zillow - put in a search city - just pick one - heck try las vegas. Now don't put in any specs. If you don't zillow will show you the pre-foreclosures - foreclosures and auctions first. I think you might be surprised. dazzlecity
Actually according to the statistics the current US economy is in great shape .The unemployment levels are lower than they've been in 50 years . The Gross national product is also on an upswing . There's no recession on the horizon according to the economists . Bear in mind this current plummet in sales on e bay is in fact current ,, none of us were doing this badly last year or even a few months ago. Other selling sites aren't having these problems . As before mentioned I just began listing on another venue and sales there are very good. That's why I think this slow sales here with e bay has got something to do with the GTC roll out . They began happening right around the same exact time . Tulips
