Logically, yes - but the reality is, here on eBay I did not experience an uptick in sales, although sales coming in, so I cannot complain.
I think that the 1,200 stimulus money is not really going to go towards new purchases, for the most part - it is mostly going towards covering bills people fell behind on paying. Whatever is left, people will spend on food and other necessities. There are so many things wrong with this plan!
Example 1
A single person with no dependents and no other person to rely on financially who does not qualify for unemployment, got the 1 x 1,200 that will most likely go on bills, rent, mortgage (not everyone qualifies for unemployment sign-up, and some of those who might qualify, did not apply).
Example 2
A family consisting of two people (husband + wife, no dependents) whose combined total earnings are 160,000 per annum really did not need to receive 2 x 1,200 = 2,400 stimulus money IF they concurrently filed for unemployment benefits which gave them weekly 600.00 extra ABOVE AND BEYOND the standard unemployment benefits. That means, they got, for just 1 month:
2,400 stimulus money deposit
4 x 600 = 2,400 per person x 2 = 4,800
the first 4 weeks plus another amount for standard unemployment benefits, which is around 60% of their last year's average earning, so say, 7,800. That is more than 15,000 total this month alone, and they can get the standard unemployment benefits for longer than 4 weeks, with the added 600 $ per week. This is actually higher (in yearly basis) than what their earnings were before, taking it from 160,000 annual earnings to 180,000
Meanwhile, while this couple can make serious investments with their extra income - the single person in Example 1 who can only rely on himself and happens to be self-employed or freelancing with most revenue being wiped out for now, may be struggling to buy food - just not enough to qualify for food stamps.
There are also rumors of dead people having received the deposit and other atrocities and people who visited the IRS website and their input of payment information was not accepted, so now standing in limbo. Among those receiving a paper check, many were told they have to wait until end of May or longer.
