SSN Request - update to release funds. "Red" Pop-Up screen?

Anyone have any experience with getting a red "Pop-Up' screen asking for Social Security Number in order to release funds? Also says something about selling more than $600? A friend has recently encountered this, and asked if he should complete it. I have never seen this, and advised that he should NOT. Sounds like a fishing attack to me, but eBay is changing it's policies so frequently that I thought I would ask. Anyone out there familiar with this?

As soon as your sales reach the $600 you too will see the “RED Pop up screen “ from eBay requesting your social security number.

It's legit.

They need the SSN so they can send a 1099-K next year.

Have a great day.

You advised he should NOT give eBay his social security number? Boy, hi's gonna be mad at you when eBay won't reliease his proceeds from a sale!

eBay, as a third-party marketplace platform, is required by law to issue a 1099-K to every seller who has over $600 in proceeds. If your friend doesn't comply, he won't get the proceeds from anything he's already sold and won't be able to continue to sell on eBay.

It's July 2022. There have been MANY threads on this and much discussion. Advise your friend to do a SSN search on the forums. This is not a threat or phishing etc, and it's not just ebay. Nothing is really under the table any more.

You're a seller so you have done this, perhaps your friend isn't a regular seller? It's not new, tell them it's like giving a W4 to their employer for income tax purposes, it's basically the same thing.

Ken, thanks for the input. I have been selling on ebay for many years, and report sales on taxes each year, but have NEVER received a 1099-k from ebay.  I appreciate the feedback. I don't stay up on all of the changes that ebay has made over the years, (and am not wildy-thrilled with the fees here anymore), but when a friend mentioned a pop-up asking for SSN, my alarm-bell went off! - Thanks for the reassurance! You are both sellers and neither of you have read enough about selling to be aware of the requirements for using Managed Payments or the need for eBay to file a 1099-K?

The $600 limit is new and "guess from who" (elections has consequences). eBay has to report it. The tax exemption is still in place , but we will see for how long...

God bless

It's a good thing, and a bad thing.

In some cases it unearths the scofflaws.

In other cases it is burdensome process for those that will actually owe no tax.
