SELLING

I have my personal account on eBay. Now I want to start selling on eBay through my company. My question is: should I create a new eBay account in my company's name, or can I use my personal eBay account?

Re: SELLING

Depends on what YOU need or want.  If you want to buy and sell under the same ID it is fine.  If you have a need to purchase things for personal use, not likely a good idea to do that under your business account.

IMHO a new account named something similar to what you call your business is likely a good move.

Please review the below link carefully. It contains very important information as to how Ebay needs to see the information you provide them on your account. It is likely easier to change your Ebay account to match your bank account if you find there to be a difference.

Re: SELLING

A lot of people will do that to keep their business and personal accounting separate and to avoid co mingling of funds.

Also, some people have separate buying and selling accounts. Keep in mind that if you sell enough you will be issued a 1099 so something to think about.

You should weigh the pros and cons for your needs to make that decision. IMO it may be cleaner to separate the accounts.

Re: SELLING

If you're reporting taxes on a Schedule C on your returns, I don't think it matters.

But, I am not a CPA or tax lawyer ... have you consulted with one?

I would, were I you.

"Company", what type of company? Is it a Corporation? A Partnership or Sole Proprietor?

If it's a corporation you can simply change your current personal account to a business account. If it's a Sole Proprietorship you don't really need to do anything, just continue as it is.

IMHO you should create an account for your company, and use your company's Taxpayer ID and a bank account owned by your company.

If you and your company have different Taxpayer IDs, you do not want the headache of having to account for your company's eBay sales on your personal tax return.

Re: SELLING

If you have expenses related to eBay that you are going to take on your taxes you need a separate account if selling on eBay is not your primary employer. You should get a separate account with a Federal EIN and state or local business license/registration. Keep good records and only use the second eBay account for the selling business.

Re: SELLING

He doesn't need to do all that ... jeeze Louise.

Some lawyer/cpa/bookkeeper type will convince him that he needs to, WITH citations from the tax law I'm sure because they need a new client.

Nobody cares about us $500 a month tycoons.

And, the IRS has its hands full with Trump and Doge right now.   LoL.

Re: SELLING

It would be less trouble to have a business account come tax time.  Having personal and business mixed on tax forms is a pain.
