SEC Announces Whistleblower Award of More Than a Million Dollars

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
2017-195

Washington D.C., Oct. 12, 2017—

The Securities and Exchange Commission today announced that a whistleblower has earned an award of more than $1 million for providing the SEC with new information and substantial corroborating documentation of a securities law violation by a registered entity that impacted retail customers.

“Today’s award reflects the impact that whistleblower information can have in uncovering violations that harm the retail investor,” said Jane Norberg, Chief of the SEC’s Office of the Whistleblower.  “We welcome high-quality information about potential securities-law violations from those in and outside a company.”

More than $162 million has been awarded to 47 whistleblowers.  By law, the SEC protects the confidentiality of whistleblowers and does not disclose information that might directly or indirectly reveal a whistleblower’s identity.  Whistleblowers may be eligible for an award when they voluntarily provide the SEC with original, timely, and credible information that leads to a successful enforcement action.

Whistleblower awards can range from 10 percent to 30 percent of the money collected when the monetary sanctions exceed $1 million.  All payments are made out of an investor protection fund established by Congress that is financed entirely through monetary sanctions paid to the SEC by securities law violators.  No money is taken or withheld from harmed investors to pay whistleblower awards.

For more information about the whistleblower program and how to report a tip, visit www.sec.gov/whistleblower.

Knowing that there is a huge eBay emplyee following on these boards now I though I might give them some interesting information. The eBay site is broken. Obviously their 3rd quarter earnings report "should" reflect this. To know more about just how bad the eBay site outages are just see http://downdetector.com/status/ebay . I only mention the site becuase eBay is not telling anyone when there are issues with their stie or maybe it would be easier if they told us when there were no issues?

don't know what you are implying......

Down detector works by people reporting issues......there is no proof required that the issue is with Ebay......it could well be with an individual computer/service/browset provider.  Not saying there aren't general problems with Ebay, certainly we've ALL experienced complete outages....  But trying use down detector as "proof" of something isn't going to fly.

Ebay uses Level3 (or they used to. I'm assuming they still do)

If you're hosting provider/ISP is having problems, then you're having problems, too.

The easier you are to offend the easier you are to control.

downdetector, LOL. Next time you pull up eBay’s map, pull up Amazon, Facebook, Microsoft, etc., and ask yourself why the maps are so similar.

Web sites go down. The internet fails. This happens all the time, and it's because the technology they're based on depends on the constant effort of millions of underpaid, barely-qualified people trying to patch together software that's being written in a hurry by more underpaid, barely-qualified people.

When you enter into a business agreement with a site like eBay, you need to understand that they bear no responsibility to perform better than is physically possible under these conditions. You're the one who has to suck up the "cost of doing business," and if everyone else found it unacceptable they wouldn't be here either. You can't hold them to impossible standards, but you can choose to invest your business assets elsewhere.

I use eBay at least twice every single day. I cannot recall a day in the last six months when the site has  not been available when I tried to use it.

"I use eBay at least twice every single day. I cannot recall a day in the last three months when the site has not been available. "

Whistleblowing rewards aren't given for exposing complete incompetance, they are give for exposing a company deliberately giving the shaft to it's users for it's own profit.

Now if a whistleblower came forward with copies of ebay internal memos about how ebay created buyercentric policies to facillitate scammy buyers getting stuff for free at the sellers expense because ebay knows that scammers buy a LOT more than honest everyday buyers do, then there will be money given out.  Heck, I might send the whistleblower a twenty myself.

I'm on eBay most of every day.  It is never down for me.

The only time I couldn't reach eBay to work, it was my server that was down, and when they got it fixed, I was able to get online and to eBay promptly.
