Hiya, so I recently sold a computer part for
£145 and after the transaction was completed the buyer changed their mind, bit odd but I obliged to their request to cancel the item (I thought they had the power to do so) I cancelled the item as requested and refunded them the appropriate amount (that’s £123) as I’d received that amount not £145. eBay taxes etc resulted in a £22 loss and the fee credits were only £3.20 towards the buyers refund. Can someone explain to me how it’s fair I lose a sale and £20 for someone else’s ignorance? On top of their abusive messages, which eBay flagrantly ignored my message reports.

Buyers can't cancel transactions they can only request it, sellers can cancel.
If you cancelled citing "buyer requested" you shouldn't lose any money on that sale since eBay credits sellers for cancellations for buyer requested. When you cancel the buyer is automatically refunded.
If you chose any other reason for cancellation that is probably why you were charged selling fees.

You are in the UK and this is mostly a US seller based forum so a lot of us are probably not familiar with any nuances there may be with regards to being a UK seller. From a US seller perspective if you cancel a sale because the buyer requested it generally the buyer is fully refunded, your fees are removed and the only out of pocket expense is the $.30 fee. You may want to post the same question on the UK seller discussion forum and see if any sellers there can better answer your question.

You may be better served by logging out ebay.com and logging back into ebay.com/uk. This is a US community discussion forum & what applies on eBay in your country may not necessarily apply in others. Sorry for your frustration.

Good luck getting the help and advice you need.

When you are in the refund process and click the entire refund amount, before you finalize the refund eBay tells you exactly how the refund amount is split up. As others have already said, if you chose that the buyer cancelled eBay only takes the amount you received less the closing fee (30 cents here, not sure what it is in the UK). All of the other fees and taxes are refunded to the buyer by eBay. In short eBay does not penalize the seller for a buyer initiated cancellation. If you changed the refund amount like you said in your post, expect a message from the buyer that probably won't be too pleasant.
