Returned item not brand new anymore

Hello,

Got returned item from buyer. Reason for return was "did not like it". Item was brand new in its original packaging. I got it in damaged packaging with scratches and dents and item has signs of using. Buyer said, "sorry, i installed it but just did not like it and box is a bit damaged"...

What should i do now, if i have no other options in return other than "issue a refund". Never happened before, so i am not sure how to make a partial refund or should i report a buyer.

Thank you for your help!

RS

Re: Returned item not brand new anymore

I  would let eBay know that the item was not in the same condition as sent as per the buyer's reply.

Re: Returned item not brand new anymore

This is what is referred to as the cost of doing business on ebay.

You will have to refund since the buyer returned something back to you.  ebay will back the buyer no matter what.

Then report the buyer for using the mail to fraud to the post office and to the buyers local police and block them and move on.

ebay has something in their new update that will allow you to do a partial refund when that happens, but it is not policy yet AND you have to match specific criteria so i doubt that you would be able to apply it now to be able to do anything to get justice for you.

Re: Returned item not brand new anymore

Sorry this happened to you, know that you are far from alone! Sadly, the best you can do is issue the refund, then report the buyer for returning an item in a condition other than what you sent it (new, returned used & damaged).  I don't believe the 'partial' refund system is in place for these situations yet.

There really needs to be a system implemented where a seller can file a claim against a buyer, simply for these circumstances.

Re: Returned item not brand new anymore

Well, the 'partial refund' is only up tp 50% and only if you use free returns.

But then again, "Buyers must return the item in the same condition" has always been ignored by ebay.

Sounds like business as usual here. Bought it, used it, and now doesn't need it. Like Christmas trees and Halloween costumes. Next comes the SNAD and you get to pay for the return. I would call eBay's CS, nothing will happen, but it's a good learning experience.

You can call Ebay CS and have them read the buyer's messages.

It needs to said that in THAT thread, the return was not accepted, the item was not returned to the seller and the seller was able to get the case closed in their favor because of the item condition clause. The seller fought based on the item condition clause BEFORE the return was voluntarily or forcefully accepted. In THIS thread, the return was ACCEPTED and the item has been returned so its totally different situation now.

Re: Returned item not brand new anymore

eBay's policy is essentially that the buyer should have 1 opportunity to try an item out to see if they like it.  If you get the buyer to admit that they used it more then 1 time and that they caused whatever scratches and dents you are referring to, then you may be able to win when you say that it is no longer brand new and now altered.   Probably not since it seems that you have already invited them to return it back but it may be worth a shot.  I am sure you were expecting it to arrive in better condition then it did but eBay will essentially say "this is a risk you as a seller run" and "block and report your buyer."

The only other thing that MIGHT work for you is if you get the rare CR rep who actually empathizes with sellers and might decide to give you a courtesy refund.

Re: Returned item not brand new anymore

Some times it is difficult to get a buyer to admit that they used the item more then once as you might come across is trying to accuse them. One of the things you might want to say is something to the effect of "I'm sorry to hear that you didn't like it. If you don't mind my asking, how many times did you try it out? The reason I ask is that some customers have said the same thing about not liking it at first, but after giving it a second or third shot, they really seem to fall in love with the product."

Having experienced this first hand - the CS will tell you that it doesn't matter what the buyer said or what the buyer returned, if you authorized a return and the buyer returned something then you will have to refund.

ebay's mantra is that they will do everything to make sure buyers are happy and will see to it that the seller will be paying for that happiness whether they have any responsibility for the problem or not.

Yes, I seem to recall reading that if the seller accepts the return, then it is a done deal.
