I've had a handful of negative feedback in my 20+ years on ebay.
I know it's not the end of the world, but this one really makes me and the product look bad.
Of course it was left without contacting me first.
I already reached out to the buyer with an apology.
I already refunded the buyer in full.
I already submitted a very kind feedback revision request.
I'm just waiting to see how that turns out.
I'm just thinking about how i'm going to respond to this negative I welcome any suggestions.
This is what i've got so far. I'm just wondering how to piece it together,
what to add, what to leave in and what to leave out.
"I'm sorry about the issue with your item."
"I wish you would have contacted me that there was a problem before leaving this feedback."
"I've sold hundreds of these without any problem or complaint."
"I've issued you a full refund including shipping."

I think that, without being snarky, it gets across the idea that something can smell bad to one person but not to hundreds of others.

Love your suggestion.
I'm just so tempted to add something that says (in a nice way):
If you have a problem, contact the seller BEFORE you leave negative feedback!
When will these buyers learn?

Then how about something like:
"I am sorry that this smelled bad to you. I will look into this, as yours is the first complaint I have received after selling hundreds of these. I have issued you a full refund, including shipping. I would have done so sooner, but until I saw this feedback I did not know that you were unhappy with the purchase."

I understand the direction you are going and the desire "teach the buyer that they are not like lots of other people in their tastes / handled it wrong". Yes that is a strong desire to correct them, but consider not doing that in a private message to the buyer. They do not want to be told they did anything wrong both on contacting you and being the "only one" who does not like it.
There is a difference between feedback response that is read by everyone. There some gentle prodding as suggested by others is probably good since other potential buyers will read the feedback.
But in a private message to the buyer you just need to apologize and show you handled it well and possibly ask for a revision. Don't try to convince them they are an outlier or followed wrong procedure, they dont want to hear that.
My opinion only.... "has worked for me in the past" 🙂

I wish you had contacted me that there was a problem before leaving this feedback. I've issued you a full refund including shipping.
Points out his poor communication and your helpful response.
