Item I sold did not arrive when expected so the customer opened a case which was fair enough. After a few extra days the item was delivered and shows as delivered on the item. I have not refunded the buyer and he is happy that item has arrived and is OK.
How does the case get closed so that I am paid. Sounds simple but first time this has happened to me.
Many thanks.

You can ask them to close it.
Or you can ask eBay to close it.
Personally I'd ask eBay on social media. (Facebook) and let them know INR opened, tracking shows delivered. They will typically step in and close in your favor on the spot.

When this happened to me it resolved itself in a couple days. How long has it been? Did you check the payment tab and verify the money is not there?

When customer "opens case" you must provide tracking# (before EBAY deadline date) proving item was delivered. If you do this...case will close automatically.
If you do not enter tracking# before deadline EBAY will automatically refund the customer.

Unless they are claiming the package never arrived, that's not on you as long as you have proof you shipped it and the tracking numer shows it's been delivered. I had a sale like that once and the person was adamant that it was never delivered. USPS showed in the tracking number that it was delivered and left with an individual. Once it leaves your hand and USPS shows they are in possession of the package, you're off the hook. The delivery times are just estimated times. Many things can affect that such as storms, lost item, etc. etc. There's nothing that anyone can do about that. Most buyers understand that but there's always that one person that think the delivery time is set in stone. Not much can be done about that.

Thank you. All sorted nicely.
